the work day for most folks..
And in case parents don't have access
to a T-V, Ferrum College has set up an
emergency information page on its web
site, Ferrum- dot- edu.

The college says that classes are
cancelled, and reiterates that there
was no incident or injuries on campus.
The college did send out a THIRD text
message at 10:30..saying that the
campus is still on lockdown.
Ferrum is also listing several
emergency numbers to call....

situation...they sounded the siren..and
put the E-2 alert system into action.
Students were sent email and text
messages...stating there was a possible
shooting on campus.

Center. Scattered showers develop this
morning as a strong cold front heads
our way. Winds will increase
considerably after the front rolls
through Tuesday night. Wind advisories
go into effect at 6pm along the Blue
Ridge. We could see wind gusts in the
50mph. Heavy snow is also possible
behind the front in areas above 3,000
feet in West Virginia and far SW
Virginia, where amounts over 6 inches
may fall through Wednesday. Visibility
will also be reduced with blowing and
drifting snow. Skies clear some
Wednesday with very windy conditions.
Temperatures will also be considerably
colder, with highs near 40. Thursday
is sunny and cool with highs near 40.
Friday should be dry, but with more
clouds. Highs are expected to be warmer
near 50. Currently, the first weekend

the road, but S-U-V's haven't always
been known for their safety features.
But according to the latest round of
crash tests that may be changing.
Susan Koeppen has more.

(END SOT) through a series of crashes -- to the
front, the side, and the rear. (vo)
coming out on top was the redesigned
Nissan Murano. (sot 114244) LUND:" the
nissan murano is the only four door
midsize SUV in this group that got good
ratings for frontal crash protection,
side impacts, and also rear impact
protection. (54) and since it comes
with electronic stability control is a
top safety pick." (vo) electronic
stability control is one reason SUVs
are safer - -and it comes standard on
all 9 vehicles tested. (sot 114335)
LUND: "electronic stability control is
a really important feature on new
vehicles out there. It can help keep
the vehicle pointed in the direction
you want it to go. And that's very
important for avoiding crashes"
(vo/GRAPHIC) Manufacturers are also
adding side airbags -- as standard
safety features. But how that feature
is designed is key. The Nissan Murano,
the Mazda CX7 and CX9 and the
Mitsubishi Endeavor all rated good. But
the Kia Sorento had the lowest rating
of poor when it came to side crashes.
(sot 114452) LUND: " with the sorento,
what we see is that the structure just
wasn't designed well to withstand the
side impact. Our side impact mimicks
what happens if you get hit in the side
by an SUV or a pickup, and the Sorento
side structure just allowed too much
intrusion. " (vo) and when it comes to
front crashes -- where vehicles are
tested at 40 miles per hour -- eight
out of the 9 SUVS had good ratings. The
Hummer H3 rated acceptable. (sot
114622) LUND: " when people first
started buying SUVs you know they
weren't designed quite to the same
safety standards as cars. But
increasingly that is the case safety
sells and SUVs are being designed to be
safe just a cars are. (33) and we see a

spending the day on Capitol Hill,
hoping to convince Congress that food
safety in this nation is up to par.

On the heels of the largest beef recall
in U.S. history...Congress is grilling
food company executives to find out if
this disturbing undercover video is an
isolated instance or common practice
at meat processing plants.

The video...shot by the Humane Society
at California's Hallmark-Westland meat
packing company....shows workers
prodding and shocking sick cows to
stand
up... so they can pass inspection.
The plant is now closed and two workers
are facing animal abuse charges.

The CEO of Hallmark-Westland was
supposed to be among the witnesses here
on
Capitol Hill, but he decided not to
attend and will likely be subpoenaed in
the future.
But there is still plenty to talk
about...congressional investigators
have
identified 91 major food recalls in
just the last year...

....everything from fresh spinach to
canned vegetables to peanut butter.

And while no one has reported getting
sick from the 143 million pounds of
recalled beef....lawmakers say one in
every four Americans gets sick from
food-borne illness every year. They
say the situation amounts to crisis in
public health...one that Congress
hopes to contain.

Ferrum College's president says "no one
has been hurt and no one is in panic
mode" as the school continues in a
