of a movie.. but this happened in this
region-
A high speed chase early this
morning in Roanoke County ended with
shootout between officers and a man
armed with an assault rifle.
Tonight, the suspect is in the
hospital, and police are trying to
figure out what prompted the violent
confrontation.

Twelve hours after the incident,
Roanoke County police were still
investigating the scene, a stretch of
US-220 near the Franklin County line.
The pickup that police were
pursuing showed evidence of the gun
battle... so did two patrol vehicles
back at the Roanoke County Public
Safety building.
The pursuit began when an officer
tried to stop the driver for speeding,
but investigators say don't know why he
opened fire.

suspect as 24- year-old Micah Sword, of
Roanoke County.
He was taken to the hospital with
life-threatening injuries, but there is
no word on his condition tonight.
One Roanoke County police officer
suffered a superficial wound to his
leg, but did not require medical
treatment.

A deputy with the Franklin County
Sheriff's Office has been placed on
administrative leave, and two Roanoke
County Police officers have been
re-assigned to administrative duty
until a review of the incident is
completed.

breathing problems.
Thursday night another person went

and reported it to authorities.

Ricin is made from caster beans and is
used to treat cancer...and not
something normally found outside a
hospital.

act of terrorism--teerrorists have used
it. In 2003, the Secret Service
intercepted an envelope filled with the
substance that was addressed to the
White House. It was also found in the
Senate mailroom and a postal facility
in South Carolina.
As for how and why the deadly ricin
ended up in a Vegas motel room...that's
still the mystery.

year.

Robin Reed in the SkyTracker7 Forecast
Center. A front will cross the region
overnight bringing rain showers for
most and a rain-snow mix to the western
highlands. Sunshine returns over the
weekend, with seasonable highs in the
50s Saturday and warmer 60s on Sunday.
Saturday does look a little breezy to
start, with winds gusting as high as
35mph. A surge of even warmer air
will arrive next Monday, driving
temperatures to around 65. FRIDAY

start today with a little March Madness
ODAC style. The Roanoke College
Maroons and Washington & Lee Generals
renewed their rivalry today in the
conference semifinals.

Generals vs. Maroons The two teams split their regular
:00 season meetings with the road team
winning each time.
Early on, Josh Laporte was going
to work for Roanoke. He takes the nice
dish from A-J Dowell and puts in a
tough bucket down low.
But Isaiah Goodman kept the
Generals in it, bombing away from the
outside for one of his three first half
trifectas. The Noke though still led
by 7 at the break.
In the second half, Washington
& Lee went on a run to tie things up.
Chris McHugh rings up three from way
downtown on the side of the key.
But Dowell wouldn't let
Roanoke down.

championships have changed location for
tonight.
Originally the girls title game
was to be played at Salem high school
and the boys' championship was set for
Bassett high school.
But since the majority of the
finalists are closer to Roanoke, the
two games will be played as a
doubleheader tonight at Northside.
The Hidden Valley girls take on
Bassett at 6pm and the Hidden Valley
boys play Blacksburg at 7:45pm.
