but a growing number of students
would like to see that change.
Members of "Students for
Concealed Carry on Campus" support two
bills introduced in the General
Assembly this year.
One would allow professors with
concealed weapons permits to carry them
on campus.
Another would let students.
Concealed permit holders can
carry guns in most public places, and
supporters think public college
campuses should be no different.
Opponents say adding more guns to
the mix is not the way to prevent mass
shootings....
They think more should be done to
prevent people with mental issues from
getting guns.
Neither bill received a hearing
this year.
Both were left in committee to
die.

GRAPHIC=NONE How well are your elected
officials doing when it comes to
running the government?
A new report card is out, grading
lawmakers in each of the 50 states.
News 7's Tim Saunders talked with
some Lynchburg College students who
were part of that grading process.

OQ=News 7 Lynchburg << When Rob Wooters was asked to
(END SOT) take part in a research project for
school, he had no idea the work he was
doing in Lynchburg, would affect the
way governments operate across the
country.
20:16:43 "It's turned out to be a
very tremendous opportunity to
essentially take a human resources
class for 18 months and be paid for
it." 20:16:52
Wooters and several other
students have been working with the Pew
Center on the States to come up with a
list of things that are going well in
state government - and call attention
to the things that need work.
Lynchburg College Professor Sally
Selden has been working with the
project since 1999.
20:13:20 "There are states that
use this information. They take it to
the state legislature, They are asking
for reforms to be implemented or
initiatives to be funded." 20:13:28
Coming up with a grade is a
complicated process.
They look at things like road
construction and its being funded.
And they look at how money is
being spent from our local budgets.
So how did Virginia do?
The study gives the Commonwealth
an "A" minus.
20:15:25 "The best hope for this
project is that people will use this
information... share this information
and improve how they're managing their
human resources within their states."
20:15:34
The full report on state
government is being published online.
You can also read a summary of
the student's findings in the latest
issue of Governing magazine. You can
