potent prescription drugs in your tap
water. A new investigation reveals that
at least 41 million Americans are
drinking water laced with
pharmaceuticals like anti
depressantsmood stabilizers and
hormone disrupters. (graphic)
The five month Associated Press probe
found drugs in the water supply of at
least 24 major metropolitan areas.
Researchers say the amounts found are
very small and pose no short term
dangers, but no one knows what the long
term consequences may be.
When people take drugs like Tylenol or
antibioticsnot all the medication is
absorbed by the bodyand the rest is
excreted as waste. But this study
indicated some water treatment plants
are not removing all drug residues.
Allen Reiner/New York City Resident
"there are products leaching into the
system that the city or the state is
not attending to and it could reach a
faucet like mine without us knowing
about it."
Most home water filtration systems are
not designed to detect drugs.
Dr. Sean Kenniff reports, New York:
And if you are a bottle water
drinkeryou may not be in the clear.
Many companies use the same municipal
water supplies to fill their bottles
and there are actually more stringent
requirements for tap water.
Water providers rarely disclose the
results of pharmaceutical screenings,
but all maintain their water is safe to
drink. And it should be emphasized the
drug concentrations found are tinyless
than a drop in a glass of water. But
now the pressure will be on to find
out whether those trace amounts are
enough to cause any harm.

cloudiness and an isolated shower
chance overnight. High pressure will
built east once again and remain with
us through Thursday, providing sunshine
and warmer than average highs.
Afternoon temperatures should climb to
near 60 degrees though the end of the
week. Our next rain maker enters from
the south Friday, bringing a 60% chance
of showers. A few may linger into
Saturday, with highs remaining in the
60s. The heaviest rain with this system
will likely stay through the eastern
Carolinas and Georgia. Skies will
clear once again Sunday with afternoon
sun and highs in the upper 50s. Look
for a temperatures cool down a bit more
as we start next week. For weather
