<< Good afternoon, I'm meteorologist
Leo Hirsbrunner in the SkyTracker7
Forecast Center. As high pressure
slides south, southerly winds will
continue Thursday, pushing a warm front
our way during the afternoon. Clouds
will increase a bit ahead of the front,
but no rain is expected. Temperatures
will climb close to 70 under partly to
mostly sunny skies. Winds will also
increase to around 20mph. Friday,
southerly moisture will combine with a
weak cold front coming in from the

west. As the front passes south it will
stall in North Carolina, bringing
scattered rain showers (40%) Friday.
Take an umbrella if you're headed out
Saturday. Showers are likely off and on
(60%) with temperatures cooling into
the upper 50s. With several waves of
disturbances coming through, a
lingering shower or two can't be ruled
out Sunday as well, with highs near 50.
Generally, the weekend looks cloudy,
cooler and showery. The start of next
week is quiet as sunshine returns along
with average highs in the upper
50s.Looks like the next chance of
showers (after this weekend) won't
arrive until next Wednesday. For

GRAPHIC=HOMETOWN HOOPS All of the Teams playing this

week in the Virginia High School State
Basketball Tournament in Richmond had
to overcome some obstacles to get this
far on the court.

The schools themselves now must
deal with the obstacles of getting the
teams AND their fans to Richmond to
watch the action.

In this week's edition of
Hometown Hoops Weekly, Mike Stevens
checks in with Hidden Valley, which is
pulling double duty on that front.

OQ=...I'M MIKE STEVENS." < (END SOT) bad news first - I say let's go for the

good.

The Titans and their fans once again
have an opportunity to grab the gold in
Richmond.

Last March the girls' team won the

state title and the school won both of
the tournament's coveted sportsmanship
trophies.

RHONDA STEGALL

So what could be bad about building
school spirit and winning - well to
tell you the truth it can get rather
expensive.

RHONDA STEGALL

Hidden Valley - like all schools in the
state - has to pay its own way to the
state tournament. The Virginia High
School League gives the school about a
$1 a mile - or in Hidden Valley's case
$300 bucks. That won't even cover the
meal money for one of the teams.

RHONDA STEGALL

The money comes out of the school's
discretionary fund that is built up
over the school year through things
like vending machine and yearbook
sales. Hidden Valley didn't get a
penny from this past weekend's packed

state quarterfinal games at Northside
high - that money got to the VHSL.
And truthfully, the money is only one
of the headaches - try chaperoning half
your student body in Richmond while
covering the other half of the student
body that is still in school.

RHONDA STEGALL

And that's not just the students -
Stegall estimates she'll need 30
substitute teachers on Thursday and
Friday. Roanoke radio station 3WR and
owner Ben Peyton will carry the Hidden
Valley games as long as the teams keep
winning. With this season's final
edition of Hometown Hoops Weekly I'm
Mike Stevens

Yesterday The lifelong New York Yankees fan is
getting a chance to play an exhibition
game at Legends Field today.

Crystal worked out with the Yankees
yesterday in Florida.

Crystal said he felt confident about
the hitting and fielding part of the
game, it was the drug test that worried
him.

He said he's afraid he will test
positive for "Maalox."

When a fan asked Crystal what position
he'd play against Pittsburgh, he
responded "DH -- Designated Hebrew."
