The president said Americans have yet
to receive those rebate checks intended

to boost consumer spending.. and he
touted a new administration plan to
help

homeowners.

Ben Bernanke said the Federal Reserve
also stands ready to help keep more

people from being buried by the record
number of foreclosures... and endorsed

new regulations to protect consumers
from shady lending practices.

Ben Bernanke, Federal Reserve Chairman:

BERNANKE 13:20:04 THE PROPOSED RULES

Alexis Christoforous, Reporting:

The Fed also helped bail out financial
giant Bear Stearns.. which

stunned Wall Street investors when it
said admitted it's running out of money

because of the credit crisis.

Stocks still went into a tailspin on
the fear the bail out won't be enough.

There could be reason to rally next
week, though... when the Fed meets.

It's expected to cut interest rates
again - perhaps as much as half a

point. That would help Americans
struggling to pay credit cards and home

But there is concern another interest

still. Alexis Christoforous, CBS News,

OQ=News 7 LYNCHBURG << When Scott Buckner bikes along
(END SOT) the Dan River, he thinks about what

might be floating in the water.

Scott Buckner: "Any type of
harmful chemicals that might be
polluting the river definitely needs to
be studied and taken care of."

A recent study by the Associated
Press shows many of the nation's
waterways are polluted with household
chemicals and prescription drugs.

Danville wasn't part of that
study, but city officials are testing
their water anyway.

Barry Dunkley: "The more

information we have, the better
informed we are and the better off we
are to make decisions."

Danville already tests for 80
different things that could contaminate
the water.

They've never tested for
pharmaceuticals or personal products
before.

Barry Dunkley with the city's
water department doesn't think those
chemicals are a big threat.

"Not a lot of research has been
done on them and what little has been
done so far has not indicated any
health problems."

Most of Danville's water comes
from the Dan River - and even though it
runs right through the heart of an
urban area with businesses right along
the waterway, it's not as contaminated
as you might think.

"With the watershed being as
rural as it is, we don't think we'll
find some of those things, maybe not
any of them."

Still, Dunkley thinks the testing
will be helpful - putting customer's
minds at ease - even though it comes

with a hefty price tag.

"It will be 10 to 15 thousand
dollars minimum."

For residents like Buckner,
that's money well spent.

"I had some concerns about our
own water supplies and the river here
in town and I'm excited to hear they're
going to do some studies on that."

everyone's enjoyment.

April 15, 2007 Richard Gere upset Hindu
activists last year by kissing
Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty
(SHIL'-puh SHET'-ee) at an AIDS
awareness event.

An arrest warrant was issued
against Gere for allegedly breaking
public obscenity laws.

But today, the country's highest
court suspended the arrest warrant.

Now, Gere is free to go to India
without fear of arrest.
