quite a scare today!
Shortly before nine this morning,
a suspicious object was found by the
principal in the front office.
The school was immediately locked
down, and authorities from across the
region responded to help insure the
safety of the students and staff.
The lock down ended around two
this afternoon, and the students were
released as scheduled.
The sheriff's department is
unable to tell us at this time what the
object was.

the initial construction phase.
Areas like Martinsville, Roanoke,

Bedford leaders are trying to find
someone who can renovate and re-open
the building on North Bridge street.
It's been empty for nearly 20
years, but as News 7's Tim Saunders
shows us, many believe the old school
is ready for new development.

years - but Bedford natives like Betty
Gereau remember when the old yellow
building was an exciting place to be.
Betty Gereau: "It was the first
public high school, built in 1912. And
it was a significant landmark at that
point."
And it remains a landmark today.
One the city wants to maintain -
with some help from the public.
They're putting out a request for
proposals, asking anyone with a eye for
re-development to check the school out.
Bart Warner: "There have been
several proposals over the last 5 or 6
years. Everything from residential
usage, to use by the community
college."
None of those ideas panned out.
That's why the city is changing
its tactics, even thinking about
selling the property.
"We're optimistic about finding
the right person or entity who can make
use of it."
It may look rough on the outside,
but city officials say this building is
structurally sound. It may take time
to clean out all the junk inside, but
the city doesn't think renovations
would take very long.
"I think the challenge will be in
finding the right user and owner for
that particular structure itself."
The building is listed in the
National Register of Historic Places,
so it qualifies for tax credits.
Gereau thinks incentives like
that will attract developers.
"It really could be put to good
use, adaptively re-used, for many
things."
Just what that use will be is now
up to the public.

sweeping ban on handgun ownership
violates the Second Amendment.
A group of City residents sued
the city over the ban, which is one of
the most restrictive in the nation.
Lawyers for both sides tried to
strike a moderate tone before the
court, arguing that there is an
individual right to own a firearm, but
that governments can impose reasonable
gun-control legislation.
A ruling is expected in late
June.

closes its last manufacturing plant in
Galax.
Officials say the move is a direct
result of the popularity of IMPORTED
wooden bedroom furniture.
The company will still operate its
distribution center and corporate
offices in Galax.
The layoffs at the manufacturing
plant will begin May 20.
Vaughan Furniture was founded in
Galax in 1923.

another big step to jumpstart the
economy.

rate by three-fourths of a percentage
point.
It's the latest action to contain
a credit crisis threatening to push the
country into a
severe recession. And it brings the
federal funds rate down to
two-and-a-quarter percent, the lowest
point since late 2004.
Still the threat of inflation may
make things harder for the Federal
Reserve.
Outside of food and energy, last
month's rise in wholesale prices was a
troubling one-half percent. That's the
biggest increase for core inflation
since November of 2006.

Jim Gilmore was chairman of a
hedge fund that was set up to market
some of Bear Stearns highest-risk
securities.
Last year, Bear Stearns admitted
that two of its funds -- which

Those two funds owned a 60
percent share of the subsidiary that
Gilmore was in charge of.
Gilmore has been criticized in
