flood waters.
The water's receding in some
places, but rain is still falling in
others.
At the Dallas-Forth Worth
Airport, additional flights have been
added to help get thousands of stranded
passengers on their way.
Weather cancellations there

country and transportation officials

"invisible disability."
Tens of thousands of U-S troops
serving in Iraq are coming home with
hearing damage.
This problem is so extensive, it
is considered the number one disability
caused by the war.
The troops are given ear plugs,
but many say they simply don't have
time to put them in during battle.
Doctors say there is no true cure
for hearing loss, especially when it is

For some, this year's race is

been able to find out what started a
fire in old Southwest Roanoke.

Two weeks ago tonight, two
buildings went up in flames on
Albemarle Avenue, displacing a number
of businesses and residents.
One of those people was Krista
Mobley. She lost pretty much
everything in the fire.
Since that time, she and her
three kids have been living in a motel
but are confident they'll soon be back
on their feet.

linked to a business that marketed high
risk securities.
Yesterday it came out Gilmore was
once chairman of a hedge fund tied to a
Bear Stearns subsidiary.
The former governor says he is
involved with Everquest Financial but
insists this company has nothing to do
with Bear Sterns.
He also rebuked criticism that he
managed the state's budget poorly while
in office.
Gilmore is hoping to replace U-S
Senator John Warner.

David Layman was a longtime
Democratic leader and activist in the
sixth congressional district, which
includes Roanoke and Lynchburg.
Layman suffered a heart attack at
a party meeting in Lexington last
night.
He died a short time later.

using satellites in 19-45, decades
before they became a reality.

syndrome since the 19-60s, Clarke died
early this morning at the age of 90.
He wrote more than 100 books on
space, science and the future and was a
co-author for "2001: A Space Odyssey."
He also anchored television
coverage of the first mission to the
moon with Walter Cronkite.
Clarke didn't regret not
following his books into space, once
saying he had arranged to have DNA from
his hair sent into orbit.

Center. Showers and a few
thunderstorms are possible as a strong
cold front sweeps across the region.
There's a slight risk of strong to
severe storms, with the biggest threat
being heavy rain and gusty winds. Most
of us should remain "storm-free", but
keep an eye to the sky. Temperatures
should remain steady in the mid 60s
with south winds 15-20mph. Some gusts
could exceed 30mph, especially in an
any storm which may develop.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Any storms end as the
front moves eastward. Showers will
continue with slow clearing by dawn.
Overnight lows will drop to near 40.
Behind the front, westerly breezes will
increase, gusting to around 40-50mph at
times in the higher elevations.
THURSDAY: Sunny and breezy. Winds will
relax by the end of the day, but most
of Wednesday will be highlighted by
northwesterly winds at 15-25mph with
gusts near 50mph. Afternoon highs are
forecast near 60. Thursday night will
be clear and chilly with lows in the
lower 30s. FRIDAY: The first full day
of spring will feature mostly sunny
with highs in the low and mid 60s.
Winds will be light from the southwest.
YOUR WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Saturday will
likely feature more clouds than
sunshine. Models are hinting at a
20-30% chance of a few light showers;

to open play in the NIT.

the big Apple - posing in front of
Madison Square Garden as part of a star
studded New York Final four that
featured North Carolina, Alabama and
the Hokies title game opponent Notre.
Tech beat New Mexico, Fairfield
and Alabama by a total of four points
to make it to the title game.
Not surprisingly it was tight, as
well. Bobby Stevens hit this jumper
and drew a foul - and then made a free
throw with 43 seconds left to go in
overtime to make it a 91-to-90 game in
favor of Notre Dame.
The Irish had a chance to ice it,
but Gary Brokaw missed the free throw
and Digger Pheelps could only watch as
the Hokies called timeout with 12
seconds left in the game.
Ed Frazier inbounded to Bobby
Stevens who went one on one with Dwight
Clay. He managed to get off a shot but
it bounced off sharply to the right.
Stevens tracked it down and his follow
hit nothing but net at the buzzer

Stevens scored 7 points in the overtime
and 17 for the game as the Hokies won
the 1973 NIT title over Notre Dame
92-to-91 - 35 years ago.

announcement this afternoon.

In 2006, Ore rushed for 1,137
yards and 16 TDs on the way to
first-team All-Atlantic Coast
Conference honors.
Ore also showed up for summer
practice out of shape last year, didn't
start the Orange Bowl and later
testified as the key witness in a
federal drug case in January.
Several coaches told us he just
made things harder than they had to be.

Abell is leaving the school.
He has resigned his post with the
Lancers to become the offensive
coordinator at Washington & Lee.

duckbilled dinosaur was found in
southwestern North Dakota.
But what makes this dino so
special is that it's skin is still
intact!
Workers have to be extremely
careful to keep that skin preserved.
Once it's uncovered, the
dinosaur's skeleton will be on display
at the North Dakota Heritage Center.
