The swift collapse of Saddam
Hussein's regime brought hope of a NEW
Iraq.
But a strong insurgency and an
ineffective Iraqi Army left American
troops fighting fierce battles.
Half-a-decade later, the dollar
cost of the war continues to escalate.
And the human toll on both
American and Iraqi lives continues to
mount.
The 2007 surge of THOUSANDS more
US troops has resulted in a DRAMATIC
drop in violence.... but parts of Iraq

OQ= JB, News 7. <<
(END SOT) The President will acknowledge the cost
has been high but argue it's all been
worth it.
Speaking at the Pentagon - target of
one of the 9/11 attacks - excerpts
released by the White House show he'll
frame the conflict in Iraq as a
critical chapter in a war that could
return here if we let up.
(gfx-in)
"The terrorists who want to murder the
innocent in the streets of Baghdad want
to murder the innocent in the streets
of American cities..." the President
plans to say..."Defeating this enemy in
Iraq will make it less likely we'll
face this enemy here at home."
(nats)
Nearly 4-thousand U-S servicemen and
women have been killed since the
beginning of a war that's cost
taxpayers at least 500-billion-dollars.
But the President has never wavered -
at least publicly - in his resolve.
(SOT BUSH March 11, 2008): "THE
DECISION TO REMOVE SADDAM HUSSEIN WAS
THE
RIGHT DECISION EARLY IN MY PRESIDENCY,
IT'S THE RIGHT DECISION AT THIS POINT
IN MY PRESIDENCY....IT WILL FOREVER BE
THE RIGHT DECISION."
(nats)
With less than 11 months left in office
and approval ratings near an all-time
low, Mr. Bush is trying to shore up
support for the unpopular war, which
has
damaged U-S credibility abroad and is
sure to define his legacy.
(gfx-in)
"A little over a year ago, the fight in
Iraq was faltering.." the President
will concede before arguing "the surge
has done more than turn the situation
around - it has opened the door to a
major strategic victory in the broader
war on terror."
(oncam)
Troop levels will become a major issue
next month when General Petraeus gives
his latest war assessment to Congress.

The world witnessed the might of the
American military machine as it lit up
Baghdad five years ago.
BOOM - BOOM - BOOM
Within just three weeks Baghdad had
fallen, and by May 1st, President Bush
declared the end of 'major combat
operations.'
BUSH:
IN THE BATTLE OF IRAQ THE UNITED STATES
AND HER ALLIES HAVE PREVAILED.
WMD's -- weapons of mass destruction,
the very reason for waging war -- were
never found.
But by the year's end -- Saddam Hussein
WAS.
Within months - America's image hit NEW
LOWS - with photos of US troops of
abusing Iraqi prisoners at Abu Graib.
NATS INSURGENTS
And a fierce insurgency had been
born...Sunni and Shia militants battled
US
forces AND each other.
As the death toll soared, America found
itself trapped in a bloody war and
increasingly isolated as one coalition
partner after another pulled troops
out.
(STANDUP BRIDGE) CHARLIE
D'AGATA/LONDON
AMERICA'S STRONGEST ALLY, BRITAIN, HAS
STOOD BY ITS SIDE SINCE THE BEGINNING.
BUT EVEN BRITAIN'S FIGHTING FORCE OF
45,000 TROOPS AT THE TIME OF THE
INVASION
HAS BEEN WHITTLED DOWN TO JUST FOUR
THOUSAND.
(NATS ELECTIONS)
There was hope Iraq had turned the
corner - when millions turned out for
national elections in 2005.
A year later -- Saddam was put do
death.
NATS - US TROOPS
A 2007 surge of THOUSANDS more US
troops resulted in a DRAMATIC drop in
violence.... but parts of Iraq remain
in chaos.
America and the world are still
weighing the costs of conflict.
Tens of thousands of Iraqis and nearly
4,000 US troops have died in the five
years since the invasion began.

building was an exciting place to be.
Betty Gereau: "It was the first
public high school, built in 1912. And
it was a significant landmark at that
point."
And it remains a landmark today.
One the city wants to maintain -
with some help from the public.
They're putting out a request for
proposals, asking anyone with a eye for
re-development to check the school out.
Bart Warner: "There have been
several proposals over the last 5 or 6
years. Everything from residential
usage, to use by the community
college."
None of those ideas panned out.
That's why the city is changing
its tactics, even thinking about
selling the property.
"We're optimistic about finding
the right person or entity who can make
use of it."
It may look rough on the outside,
but city officials say this building is
structurally sound. It may take time
to clean out all the junk inside, but
the city doesn't think renovations
would take very long.
"I think the challenge will be in
finding the right user and owner for
that particular structure itself."
The building is listed in the
National Register of Historic Places,
so it qualifies for tax credits.
Gereau thinks incentives like
that will attract developers.
"It really could be put to good
use, adaptively re-used, for many
things."
Just what that use will be is now
up to the public.
