Tuesday's feel-good rally quickly lost
its luster after the Dow dropped more
than 200 points yesterday. The Federal
Reserve had hoped it's bold rate cut
could settle market fears.
(SOT WILLIAM CHENEY/JOHN HANCOCK
FINANCIAL SERVICES): "THIS IS A LARGE
MOVE BY HISTORICAL STANDARDS. THE FED
DOESN'T OFTEN MOVE THAT MUCH. AND EVEN
THOUGH SOME PEOPLE WERE HOPING FOR
MORE, IT'S STILL A LOT."
Since October, the Fed has now cut its
benchmark rate 3 full points. From
5-and-a-quarter to 2-and-a-quarter as
it tries to make more money available
at cheaper rates to banks increasingly
afraid to lend.
It's not the ups and downs of the
market that have people concerned. It's
the uncertainty that big banks remain
vulnerable to a credit crisis like the
one that sank Bear Stearns....and that
THEIR nest-egg could be next.

Nat Marshall: "We can't attract

Tuesday's feel-good rally quickly lost

DOESN'T OFTEN MOVE THAT MUCH. AND EVEN
THOUGH SOME PEOPLE WERE HOPING FOR
MORE, IT'S STILL A LOT."
Since October, the Fed has now cut its
benchmark rate 3 full points. From
5-and-a-quarter to 2-and-a-quarter as
it tries to make more money available
at cheaper rates to banks increasingly
afraid to lend.
It's not the ups and downs of the

the uncertainty that big banks remain
vulnerable to a credit crisis like the
one that sank Bear Stearns....and that
THEIR nest-egg could be next.

The recent bout of windy weather
has left many roofs a bit bare.
On Beyond the Forecast,
Meteorologist Brent Watts makes a house

important tips for homeowners.
CHANNEL=A SOT FULL

INQ=THINGS ARE CERTAINLY....
<<
Things are certainly looking up for the
roofing industry. Especially when winds
in southwest Virginia seem to be
getting stronger. Bill Whitaker with
Vinton Roofing has been running
non-stop over the past several months,
replacing missing shingles. Most from
older roofs that couldn't stand the
brunt of nearly tropical storm force
winds.
Winds have increased so much lately,
parts of Virginia and North Carolina
have now been considered High Wind
Catastrophe Areas.
This is important when you're
putting on a new roof. Most insurance
companies no longer cover the old 20-yr
shingle that only had a 48 mph wind
rating. And their reconsidering the
25-year 3-tab shingle that has a 60mph
wind rating. This is why many
homeowners are putting on the new
architectual shingles which are built
to last. Their wind rating? 110mph>>
RUNS=1:12 (END SOT)
OQ=...Meteorologist Brent Watts.
Getting the better shingles will
cost you.
Architectural shingles cost about
25 to 35 dollars more per square than
the 3-tab shingles.
But it may save you money in the
long run.
The longer you wait to have your
roof repaired the better chance you'll
have leeks.
If you have damage, before you
call your homeowner's insurance agent,
call the roofing company FIRST.
The insurance company will likely
want an estimate, and by getting on the
waiting list you'll get the work done
sooner.
