OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7, Bedford County << Danny Johnson runs a successful
(END SOT) orchard and winery in Bedford.

It's an operation that welcomes
apple lovers year round, but it didn't
start out that way.

Danny Johnson: "We had a bad hale
storm back in the 80's, which wiped out
our crop of apples."

That stroke of bad luck led to a
"pick-you-own" apple business.

Soon, people were coming from all
over the state - transforming Johnson
from farmer to host.

"We found out that people would
come back, off the beaten path you
might say, and visit."

Now he's teaching other farmers
how to capture that success.

He's working with the Virginia
Cooperative Extension, hosting a
seminar on "agri-tourism."

Martha Walker: "Our goal is to
help our producers see other options
that they can use on their land to keep
their farms viable."

Farmers like Johnson say there's
a lot to think about when switching
over to tourism like opening up your
land to the public. But ag officials
are hoping farmers realize that
liability is worth the risk.

"To bring people into the
country, onto a farm, and let them
experience how a farm actually works.
That's where the interest is."

Interest some land owners are
picking up on.

Joanna Protz: "We do have some
property and it's quite lovely and
maybe we could share it someday."

For anyone that does want to
follow in Johnson's footsteps.

"You have to start small and
grow. Grow yourself into
agri-tourism." An idea that could
put farming back on the map.

(END SOT) A new study's confirmed that kids with

weight problems likely face major
health issues down the road.

(vo)

A 30-year follow up found heavy kids
developed heart disease or diabetes
even more than expected.

The research adds to evidence it's
never too early to get started on a
healthy lifestyle.

(wipevo)

Wives and other caregivers of men with
prostate cancer may be at risk of
anxiety, fatigue and other symptoms
that make life harder than it needs to
be.

The findings suggest their health
shouldn't be ignored even when the

focus is on the patient..

(wipevo)

Too few American adults are getting
their shots.

Only 2-percent got a vaccination that
can protect against shingles and most
failed to gets shots for tetanus and
the flu.

Experts say most adults tend to believe
the vaccinations they got when they
were kids last longer than they do.

Those are some of today's top medical
stories.

Especially when it's a niche

But that's what the directors of

has done in Lynchburg.

bgrebe@wdbj7.com Kimberly, the mission of the
museum is to educate the public about
the role of chaplains, priests, and
rabbis, and religious organizations in
the Civil War.

In doing so, it helps preserve
religious artifacts and shows the
influence religion had on the lives of
political and military personnel.

With a number of paintings and
other period artifacts, the Civil War
Chaplains Museum has a lot of great
things to display... just not enough
space to display it.

The museum is currently housed in
a one-thousand square foot room in the
Arthur S. DeMoss Building at Liberty
University.

But plans are in the works to
expand into a facility ten-times as a
large.

Monetary donations are needed for
sure, and the museum's board also works
to continue finding more artifacts for
display... but not Civil War items in
general... they're looking for very
specific things... religious artifacts
like Bibles from that era, uniforms
from Chaplains or other spiritual

leaders.

They're hoping the website,
chaplainsmuseum.org, will be able to
reach people and assist in the
gathering artifacts and raise money.

At the same time, the site serves
as a teaching tool about the importance
of religion in the daily life of the
Civil War era... both in the spiritual
sense and the social sense.
