It's an operation that welcomes
apple lovers year round, but it didn't
start out that way.
Danny Johnson: "We had a bad hale
storm back in the 80's, which wiped out
our crop of apples."
That stroke of bad luck led to a
"pick-you-own" apple business.
Soon, people were coming from all
over the state - transforming Johnson
from farmer to host.
"We found out that people would
come back, off the beaten path you
might say, and visit."
Now he's teaching other farmers
how to capture that success.
He's working with the Virginia
Cooperative Extension, hosting a
seminar on "agri-tourism."
Martha Walker: "Our goal is to
help our producers see other options
that they can use on their land to keep
their farms viable."
Farmers like Johnson say there's
a lot to think about when switching
over to tourism like opening up your
land to the public. But ag officials
are hoping farmers realize that
liability is worth the risk.
"To bring people into the
country, onto a farm, and let them
experience how a farm actually works.
That's where the interest is."
Interest some land owners are
picking up on.
Joanna Protz: "We do have some
property and it's quite lovely and
maybe we could share it someday."
For anyone that does want to
follow in Johnson's footsteps.
"You have to start small and
grow. Grow yourself into
agri-tourism." An idea that could
put farming back on the map.

Monetary donations are needed for
sure, and the museum's board also works
to continue finding more artifacts for
display... but not Civil War items in
general... they're looking for very
specific things... religious artifacts
like Bibles from that era, uniforms
from Chaplains or other spiritual
leaders.

MANY CHAPLAINS, PRIESTS, RABBIS ON

They're hoping the website,
chaplainsmuseum.org, will be able to
reach people and assist in the
gathering artifacts and raise money.
At the same time, the site serves
as a teaching tool about the importance
of religion in the daily life of the
Civil War era... both in the spiritual
sense and the social sense.

The museum will have some it
collection on display this weekend for
the 12th Annual Civil War Seminar at
Liberty University.
This year's topic is The Battle
of Gettysburg.

Grown men and women raced children's
tricycles through the streets of San
Francisco yesterday in the annual "big

It's San Francisco's answer to the
Running of the Bulls.
Contestants vied for homemade prizes
made by John Brumit-- an artist who
dreamed up the race eight years ago.
Awards were handed out for first and
last place, best costume, and of
course, most injured.
