degree murder.

The jury had deliberated the case
of the 31-year old Roanoke man for more
than three hours last night, before
calling it a night.
The guilty verdict came quickly
this morning. But then the jury spent
another three hours debating an
appropriate sentence.

The sentence adds up to a total
of 32 years in prison for the murder of
Ransome's girlfriend, Latasha Boardly.
The couple had two children
together. Because the little girls

of child abuse and neglect and
sentenced him to four years for that.

offered a deal by the state of
Virginia.
The Associated Press reported
those families were offered a
100-thousand dollar settlement each.

settle they would be giving up their
rights to sue the state and Virginia
Tech.

to the Associated Press by one of the
relatives.
Families of those killed would
have to make a decision by March 31st
-- next Monday.
In addition to the money,
families would also get a chance to
meet and question the governor and
university officials about what
happened April 16th.
But some people question the
settlement amount.
Local attorney Harvey Lutins- who
doesn't represent any of the families-
says the state is protected by what's
called "sovereign immunity" - which
caps potential damages at 100-thousand
dollars.

a crane collapsed in Miami.

skyscraper building site isn't stable,
hampering rescue efforts.
There's no word yet on why the
crane fell.

fire department who was called in to
help.
No major damage.. but the

several felonies for allegedly starting
forest fires.
The Virginia Department of
Forestry has arrested a 21-year-old man
from Lynch Station.
He's accused of starting a
wildfire on February 28th.
Forestry officials used
bloodhounds to track the suspect from
the scene of the arson to his home.
His name has not been released.
If convicted, the man could face
up to 10 years in prison or a fine of
25-hundred dollars.

new evidence in one of America's
biggest criminal mysteries.

In November of 1971, a man who
referred to himself as D-B Cooper
hijacked a 727 over Washington State.
After receiving a 200 thousand dollar
ransom, Cooper jumped out of the plane
with a parachute at about ten thousand
feet.
He was never seen again.
Then just two weeks ago, a contractor
plowing a new road dug up an old
parachute right in the area the F-B-I
said Cooper would have landed.
The parachute is the same type that was
used by Cooper.
It was the first break in the case in
25 years. The F-B-I believes Cooper
died in the jump.

down to make way for The Olde Dominion
Agriculture Complex - a building that
will house a large arena, a farmers
market, and a place for the community
to hold special events.

only for agriculture, but for the

They're hoping to use the
building for concerts and other shows.
Jay Calhoun says it will give the
county a unique opportunity for
economic development.

people in to our restaurants, our
motels, and our businesses."
Tim Saunders: When you drive by
the site, you'll see this sign that
shows just how much money needs to be
raised for the project. They have a
long way to go, but organizers hope to
start construction in the next 18
months.

As the dirt starts moving, county
leaders are working to drum up support
for the project.
Jay Calhoun: "We're trying to
pull a lot of different groups together
on this project."
Groups like teachers, business
leaders - and farmers from all over the
area.

project. We want this to be something
our surrounding counties can benefit
from as well."

complex a statewide hub for ag events

At eight foot five, Leonid Stadnyk
had to quit his job when he could no
longer walk to work. So someone gave
him a bicycle.
Today the President of the Ukraine
did that one better. He gave Stadnyk a
custom minivan.
The van was designed for someone of
Stadnyk's size. His neighbors promise
to keep him in gas.
Leonid has suffered from a growth
disorder since undergoing brain surgery
at the age of 12.
