At 9:45 this morning-- nearly
20-thousand students, faculty and
staff received text messages.

The University says the drill
went as planned, but it is gathering

feedback from subscribers.

It will study the results over

Roanoke County jurors who spent about
seven hours agonizing over Leroy
Ransome's guilt and ultimate
punishment.

acknowledged that he killed Latasha
Boardly.

The 25- year old Roanoke woman
was the mother of their two children.

Specific details of what happened
at the Super-8 Motel a year and a half
ago- -varied widely. Ransome said then
and he told the jury that the gun went
off by accident as he tried to unload
it.

After struggling with the case
Monday night- -the jury returned in the
morning and quickly found Ransome
guilty on all counts.

He'd already pled "no contest"
then withdrew his plea, choosing to
take his chances with a jury.

Only at the sentencing hearing,
did the jury learn Ransome had three
prior convictions.

total of four earlier criminal
convictions.

The jury argued at length over
the appropriate sentence, finally
settling on a total of 32 years, far
short of life sentence he could have

Once Ransome was convicted, his
father, Leroy Ransome Senior, shared a
moment of condolence with the victim's
mother- -despite their differences.

While others left the courthouse
in disappointment, even anger,

Six clients at his business Sky
Nails said Tran had touched them
inappropriately.

Last week, a judge dismissed a
felony charge of sexual battery against

Today was Tran's third acquittal,
but he has several more trials to go.

were suddenly suspended today when an
indoor sprinkler went off.

Lobby and some offices in the back
hallways.

Employees spent most of the
afternoon mopping up the water along
with fire fighters who were called in
to help.

No major damage..but the incident
threw a kink into some of the

The hote is currently re-modeling
several hallways and about 180 guest
rooms - there are nearly 330 rooms in
