Clearly, the U.S. economy is going

through a very difficult period.

TESTIFYING ON CAPITOL HILL, BERNANKE
SAID THE OUTLOOK FOR THE FIRST HALF OF

THIS YEAR IS EVEN WEAKER THAN THE
PREVIOUS FORECASTS.

Bernanke SOT: "It now appears likely

that gross domestic product (GDP) will

CONCERN AND OFFERED NO ASSURANCES OF

(Alexis Christoforous/NYSE) Bernanke's
good news was that he doesn't expect

outlook.

STRUGGLING

HOMEOWNERS ARE ON THEIR OWN, BERNANKE
SAID SAVING THE BANK WAS A WAY OF

HELPING ALL AMERICANS.

Bernanke: We did what we did because we
felt it was necessary to preserve the

(END SOT) last month collecting shoes in every

possible size.

They're not for anyone to wear -
they're being used to make a statement.

Cheryl Burnette: "We got together
and decided we need to send a message
to big tobacco companies."

Centra Health is working with the
Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids to show

what happens to people who smoke and
chew tobacco.

They're putting 12-hundred pairs
of shoes on the front lawn of E-C Glass
High School....one for every person who
dies each day from tobacco use.

Burnette says her goal is
prevention.

"It's very hard for people to
quit smoking. It's a whole lot easier
to convince people not to start
smoking. That's what we're here for."

Students aren't the only ones
they're trying to reach. This is also
a message for lawmakers to pass a ban
against indoor smoking in public
places. It's on the books in other
states, but it's failed several times
here in Virginia.

"The argument there is for
personal freedom, but your personal
freedom ends at the end of your
cigarette. I do not want to be
inhaling your second hand smoke and the
surgeon general has determined no
amount of second hand smoke is safe."

Students like Caitlin Shoemaker
are hoping this display will make an
impression on her peers.

"I'm hoping they'll see the
12-hundred pairs of empty shoes and
realize that could happen to you one
day."

Taking a stand against tobacco,
without ever moving a step.

Center. High pressure this evening will
cross Pennsylvania. Light northerly
winds will become easterly overnight,
then southeasterly Thursday. This will
once again "lock in" clouds, drizzle,
fog and cooler temperatures. Lows
tonight with fairly clear skies early
will drop to the mid 30s. By Thursday
morning, with the onshore flow and
moisture in the area, expect clouds,
drizzle and light showers. There's even
a slight chance of light sleet Thursday
morning - just like some of us
experienced this past Sunday. Highs
will only hit the low and mid 40s
Thursday - much cooler! Expect steady
temperatures Thursday night around the
lower 40s as showers continue.
Friday's weather looks interesting. The
morning will likely start with clouds,
fog and showers, then we may catch a
break with a little sunshine.
Temperatures should warm to near 70
with a warm front lifting north of our
viewing area. Then, in the afternoon
and evening hours, more clouds and rain
will return as a cold front charges
through the region. South breezes could
get gusty Friday, around 20-30mph.

Showers are forecast to continue Friday
night and into mid morning Saturday.
After that time, drier air returns from
the north, ushering in seasonable
temperatures in the 60-65 degree range
for the weekend. After Saturday
morning's showers, we're looking at
mostly clear to partly cloudy skies for
the rest of the weekend For weather
