OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7, Lynchburg << Kevin Shroyer is taking time off
(END SOT) from his day job to sign runners up for
Saturday's Point of Honor 5-K.
It's the first race he's ever
organized - and it's taken a lot of
work.
"Quite a lot more than I
anticipated, haha."
But Shroyer's taking it all in
stride, because this race has a special
meaning behind it.
"The main reason I put this
together was because I want to do
whatever I can to spread the word about
the positive effects of organ
donation."
Shroyer has already seen those
positive effects.
When his daughter Korinne died in
2002, her lungs and other organs were
donated to people who may not have
lived otherwise.
"It has been the silver lining in
that cloud that has hung over us for so
long after Korinne passed away."
This weekend's race will be held
in honor of Korinne - and money raised
will go to Life Net - a Virginia based
agency that connects patients with the
organs they need to survive.
"When everybody shows up tomorrow
and has a good time, money is going to
be raised for organ donation. It's all
going to be worth it"
The race will start here in
Riverfront park. More than 130 people
are signed up to run or walk. And
Shroyer hopes while they're out here on
the track, they'll remember what this
is all about.
"If I can't do anything other
than just get people thinking about
organ donation, if they haven't ever
thought about it before, just get them
thinking about 'is that something I
should consider for myself? I've
accomplished my mission."
Because much like a race, saving
lives is a fight against time.
And Shroyer wants to come out a
winner.
