OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7, Amherst County << Christopher Smith investigates
(END SOT) internet scams for the Amherst County

Sheriff's office.

Lately, he's watched his case
load go up.

Christopher Smith/Amherst County
Investigator "It is probably the
quickest growing area of concern to law
enforcement and it's growing quickly in
this area."

In 2007, internet scams cost
victims nationwide more than 230
million dollars.

And investigators believe that
number could be even higher, because
most people only report these crimes to
their bank and not police.

"A lot of times, I think it's
because they're embarrassed they became
a victim."

Smith is trying to help victims
along with the Central Virginia
Computer Crimes Task Force.

A group of 13 agencies that
investigates and prosecutes internet
criminals - while informing the public
about new scams.

Robert New/Campbell County
Investigator: "If we can stop the
person from becoming a victim, the
crime becomes no longer valuable."

Investigators say most of these
crimes are happening over e-mail, which
is why you should always pick up your
phone and make sure you're talking to a
real person before you send your credit
card information to someone you don't
know.

"If you're going to buy something
online, do as much investigation as you
can."

"If you do become a victim,

notify your local law enforcement
agency."

Because even though these cases
are hard to solve, it can be done with
the right information.

CK/TITAN RADAR ANALYSIS AND MORE

<< Good evening, I'm meteorologist
Brent Watts in the SkyTracker7 Forecast
Center. What a delightful Thursday
afternoon! Skies were partly sunny and
temperatures couldn't have felt more
spring-like. Most areas easily reached
the mid and upper 70s. Looks like we'll
do it again Friday. Southerly winds
will help transport additional heat
into region as we end the week. As a
cold front gets closer, a stray shower
is possible during the afternoon.
However, the best chance of organized
showers won't arrive until after
sunset. Friday night, look for showers
and an isolated storm. Those will
continue off and on through Saturday
morning. The first half of Saturday
will be cloudy with showers.
Unfortunately, we're not expecting a
lot of rain with this system. Partial
clearing is possible Saturday
afternoon. Highs will be cooler, in the
upper 60s. Lows that night will fall to
the low and mid 40s. Sunday is even
cooler with highs only in the 50s. Get

the latest weather forecast and radar
imagery anytime on our website,

ESPN Heavy fog delayed things for over :00 an hour - but it couldn't stop Arnold
Palmer from hitting the ceremonial tee
shot to open the event. 50 years ago
today - Arnie won his first of four
Masters.

Once the fog cleared things got
really interesting as Ian Poulter - the
Englishman stepped up to the par three
16th and hit his tee shot right in the
heart of the green. But watch the
slope grab and take it right to the cup
for a hole in one. Poulter finished
today with a solid two under.

Tiger Woods was steady as can be
opening his first round with 12
straight pars - he then bogeyed two
back to back holes - right before he
dropped in this wicked Eagle chip in
number 15 to get back to even.

Tiger finished the first first
round at even par.

Virginia Tech's Drew Weaver - one
of three amateurs in the Masters - was
even though nine holes and eventually
finished his first round at Augusta at
four over par. His former Hokie

teammate Johnson Wagner is even after
his first 18.
