OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7, Nelson County << Chicken houses are normally
(END SOT) cramped spaces where birds literally

rest on top of each other.

But at Black Eagle Farm in Piney
River, they're trying something
different.

Ralph Glatt/Black Eagle Farm

Owner: "The average chicken farm, the
birds would not be allowed to roam at
all. They would be caged, 4 or 5 birds
per cage, and have a very limited
amount of space."

Here, the chickens will be free
to move around - there's even a door
that opens for the birds to go outside.

"The birds have more space,
they're able to sort of follow their
own natural instinct of roosting,
perching on various levels."

It's part of a new organic
operation - the first of its kind in
the U-S.

John Dobbs/Black Eagle Farm
Manager: "The care for the bird, the
daily care, is more personalized."

"There's a lot of paperwork
involved in proving that we're feeding
organic feeds to the birds. That
they're being raised organically."

Most of the eggs you buy in the
grocery store come from out of state,
but when eggs come from this farm,
they'll be on grocery store shelves in
a matter of hours. And growers say
that will give you a fresher product.

"What we're producing for the

public is good for the public."

Organic eggs cost about 2 dollars
more than the average dozen.

But, Glatt is hoping his local
ties will encourage shoppers to give
him a try.

"We'll be the only ones in the
state producing in this size and
capacity."

Which means the eggs that roll
off this conveyer belt will be a true
hometown product.

one of the trains.

After 45 minutes passengers in
another train, backed up, started
pulling open the doors using the
emergency handles.

That created a dangerous
situation, so everyone was evacuated.

No one was seriously hurt.

OQ=...NEWS 7 SPORTS << For the past year Frank Beamer
(END SOT) has been a spokesman for the

university, and admirer of the school's
resiliency and like so many of us often
times an emotional onlooker.

He's one of those "the glass is
half full" optimists - who believes
with all his heart that a lot of good
has come out of that horrific day.

FRANK BEAMER

Beamer and his players knew much
of the burden of propping up the Hokie

Nation would fall on their shoulders.
They embraced the responsibility by
doing everything from wearing
commemorative patches to winning an ACC
Championship.

But Beamer knows there is no
title or period of time that can erase
the lasting sting of that day.

Last year the Hokies canceled the
Spring game out of respect to the

expected at Lane Stadium as the Hokies
gather for the annual Maroon and White
contest that like so many things is
back on schedule. In Blacksburg - Mike
