OQ=News 7 Lynchburg << Months of talking about race have
(END SOT) stirred a range of emotions in the

neighborhoods of Lynchburg.

Joyce Price/ Dialogue
Participant: "It was challenging. It
was almost frightening. It was at
times disgusting. And it was certainly
maddening and infuriating."

But residents who took part in
the city's dialogue on race and racism

say it's been a productive experience.

And now they have a list of 10
ideas for the city to act on.

Leslie King/Dialogue Coordinator:
"Some of the ideas can be done quickly
and others will take more time."

Education tops the list of ideas
that includes

creating a school curriculum that
promotes diversity and social
responsibility.

Citizens want to guarantee
college tuition for all graduates of
Lynchburg city schools.

And help students learn technical
skills so that dropouts and others can
find a job.

Margaret Schmitt/Dialogue
Coordinator: "Education in general is
the key to success and the key to
reducing the gaps in our community."

City officials say their dialogue
on race has been one of the most
successful events of its kind in the
country.

Nearly 11-hundred people have
participated - but that hasn't
convinced everyone that diversity
issues are being properly addressed.

Anthony Howard/Lynchburg
Resident: "If we were trying to break
down racism and race, then more people
would have taken part and taken
interest in this.">>

The mega-merger LOOKS good for

BENEFITS WITH GREATER VALUE, MORE
CHOICES, AND STABILITY FOR OUR
EMPLOYEES,

CUSTOMERS, AND THE COMMUNITIES WE
SERVE."

But the chairman of the House
Transportation Committee doesn't see
it.

(SOT REP. JAMES OBERSTAR//D-MINN):

"WHAT WE'VE SEEN IN MERGERS IS SERVICE

DECLINES, THE NUMBER OF COMMUNITIES
SERVED DIMINISHED, AIR FARES GO UP,

FEWER

CHOICES FOR CONSUMERS."

It's a deal that could re-shape the
entire industry...Forcing other
carriers

into mergers of their own.

That's a scenario federal regulators
don't like - they think it'll mean less

competition, lower service, higher
prices....and more exposure if things
go

bad.

(SOT REP. JAMES OBERSTAR/D-MINN): "WHEN

YOU HAVE ANOTHER ECONOMIC DOWN-TURN,

THOSE BIG CARRIERS CRASH VERY HARD."

But it's a tough time for airlines
RIGHT NOW. The industry still hasn't

bounced back from 9-11 and the
combination of sky-rocketing fuel costs
and

intense competition from budget outfits
like Jet Blue and Southwest has many

barely hanging on...and passengers
increasingly unhappy.

(SOT ANGELA

RAYBURN/TRAVELER/MINNEAPOLIS) : "THE
WHOLE INDUSTRY IS IN TROUBLE

ANYWAY. WITH HIGH FUEL PRICES AND
MERGING TO MAKE THIS MEGA AIR-LINE. I
MEAN

THEY CAN'T EVEN GET IT RIGHT AS
INDIVIDUAL ENTITIES."

There's still some hurdles in the way.
Stockholders have to approve and the

companies have to cut through some
union issues....Only then will the

government consider giving the
clearance....for take-off.

(oncam)

Most analysts do expect the deal to get
the government OK....Mainly because

the two carriers don't overlap much
here in the U-S.

suspicion of driving under the

Police say the Denver Nuggets
star was pulled over after weaving and

Anthony was alone in the car and
failed a series of sobriety tests at
the scene, but was ticketed and
released. Anthony consented to a
blood test, but results won't be
available for about two weeks.

Denver police don't jail DUI
suspects.
