the flames because of a broken water
main and steep terrain under the
bridge.
Police believe the fire was
started by a group of homeless people

with calm wind and temperatures falling
to the low and mid 30s. There could be
some areas of frost early Thursday
morning.
Temperatures continue to warm to around
80 degrees for the rest of the week
under sunny skies. High pressure will
wrap in southerly winds at 5-10mph,
leading to the spring warmth.
The weekend may not be looking as wet
as previously forecast. A late shower
is possible Saturday, but most of the
day should be partly sunny.
Temperatures will still be warm in the
low to mid 70s. Saturday night expect a

House, the Pope had a lot of people
show up for his 81st birthday.

D-C as the pope mobile headed down
Pennsylvania Avenue.
Pope Benedict smiled and waved at
the crowd.
He met with President Bush at the
White House this morning.
He later held a private prayer
service with about 300 bishops.

State Trooper and eluding police for
more than a week was brought to a
courthouse today to answer to those
charges.

VO-NAT Steven Branscome was ordered to
be held without bond in Princeton, West
Virginia.
Earlier this month, Branscome
allegedly led police on a chase in
Giles County, then opened fire on a
Virginia State Trooper after they
crossed into West Virginia. The trooper
was not seriously hurt and Branscome
escaped.
He was eventually caught in
Texas.
Branscome will face malicious
wounding and other charges in West
Virginia first, then likely be brought
to Virginia to face additional charges.

in Virginia is over.
Governor Kaine made the move
today following a U-S Supreme Court
decision that upheld lethal injections.
A spokesman for the governor
said executions will proceed according
to the same procedures that were in
place before the Supreme Court case was
heard.

prettiest Russian woman behind bars.
Inmates are judged on skills like
hairdressing, singing, or dance
choreography.
The pageant has become a way for
them to show good behavior, and perhaps

baseball teams hooked up today as
Hidden Valley hosted Alleghany. The
Titans only loss this year was to South
Carolina's Conway - a Four A school
during a spring break tournament in
Myrtle Beach.
Alleghany, meanwhile, came in
with a perfect 9 and 0 record.

Mountaineers paused for a moment of
silence to remember the fallen at
Virginia Tech on this one year
anniversary.
The conditions for the
non-district showdown were absolutely
perfect even if the fielding and the
pitching were not.
The Mountaineers got busy in the
first inning and took advantage of
deficiencies in both areas on the part
of the Titans as they pushed across
five runs in the top of the opening
frame. Jacob Vaughn got Josh Taylor
home with this single to left.
But in this game no lead was
safe. The Titans got this two run
homer by Joe Greenway to deep left
center to cut the lead to 5-to-2 in the
bottom of the first.
And then two batters later, Micey
O'Brien smacked another two run shot -
this one to the oppositie field in
right and the Titans were right back in
the game making it 5-to-4 after an
inning.
Both teams scratched across two
runs in the second inning as Jordan
Gabrielle singles into left field
driving home pinch runner Matt
Williams, who scores all the way from
second on the play.
But just when the Titans thought
they were back in business - Liberty
University bound senior Steven Keener
ripped one over the right field fence
to put the Mounties back on top by two
runs.
His offensive mate Steven Holt
also helped jack up that total with
this solo blast to right field. It was
9 to 6 Alleghany on top heading to the
bottom of the fourth frame.
But Hidden Valley would not go
away. Gabrielle slaps another single
into left and drives home Zack Helgeson
as the Titans take their first lead of
the game - 10-to-9 heading into the
7th.
But it would not hold up. Ryan
Kessinger helps his own cause with an
RBI in the seventh. A total
*CG final Alleghany of 8 pitchers are used - four on each
15 side - and 28 runs are scored as the
Hidden Valley Mounties stay unbeaten with the 15 to
13 13 win over Hidden Valley.

first year head coach Darren Hodges who
replaced Abe Naff. What has been even
more of a head scratcher for Hodges has
been the way that Ferrum has struggled.
He expected the Pitching to carry the
Panthers, while the bats struggled a
bit, the opposite has been true.
