OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7, Lynchburg << A bridge is gone and police say a
(END SOT) campfire may be to blame.

They believe some people living
under the bridge started the fire last
night to stay warm.

Unfortunately, it got out of
control and crews had a tough time
putting it out.

Cold weather caused a water main
to break, which made putting out the
flames even harder.

When Lynchburg officials got word
of a fire Wednesday morning, they
weren't sure what to expect.

"They told me it was a water line
break and the power was out and it
really sounded like a lot of bad stuff
happening all at once."

It was a perfect storm of
problems as crews fought a fire on one
of the city's oldest wooden bridges.

"The subsequent fire broke an 18
inch water main under the bridge. We
spent the rest of the night trying to
figure out how to cut off the water and
put out the fire."

Charred planks are now the only
thing left.

The bridge is gone and drivers
will now be taking a permanent detour.

But it's not a major loss for the
city.

They were already planning to
tear down the bridge for a new road
project.

"Fortunately, this is not a bad
bridge to detour around, and so we're
going to look at that, but it's really
too early now to say how that's going
to work."

Fort avenue will be closed
indefinitely between Park Avenue and
Kemper Street.

Residents that live in that
neighborhood may also notice a strange
color to their water this afternoon.

That's due to the water main

break and crews are working to fix the
problem.

El Paso Co., CO Sheriff Sheriff Terry Maketa/El Paso County,
CO: One of our greatest concerns, and
something we're watching very closely
is the weather. As you well know, once
the sun comes up, the air starts
warming up, the air can breathe new
life into the fire. We're very
concerned about the direction the winds
are blowing.

<< Good evening, I'm meteorologist
Robin Reed in the SkyTracker7 Forecast
Center. The dry air that's across the
area will cool rapidly this evening
once the sun goes down. Look for clear
skies tonight with calm wind and

temperatures falling to the low and mid
30s. There could be some areas of frost
early Thursday morning. Temperatures
continue to warm to around 80 degrees
for the rest of the week under sunny
skies. High pressure will wrap in
southerly winds at 5-10mph, leading to
the spring warmth. The weekend may
not be looking as wet as previously
thought. A late shower is possible
Saturday, but most of the day should be
partly sunny. Temperatures will still
be warm in the low to mid 70s. Saturday
night expect a few showers, some of
which may linger into the first half of
Sunday as a front works to the east.

RUNS=1:34 (END SOT)

OQ=CBS News, Washington. <<: Pope Benedict celebrated his 81st
(END SOT) birthday with more than 12,000

well-wishers at the White House today.

President Bush welcomed the Pope and
his convictions.

President Bush: IN A WORLD WHERE SOME
TREAT LIFE AS SOMETHING TO BE DEBASED
AND DISCARDED, WE

NEED YOUR MESSAGE THAT ALL HUMAN LIFE
IS SACRED."

The President and the Pontiff share
common views on issues like

abortion and gay marriage...while they
disagree over the war in Iraq. But

today's event was more about mutual
admiration.

Pope Benedict:

I express once more my gratitude for
invitatin, my joy to be in your midst"

The leaders met privately in the Oval
office later ... before the Holy

Father toured the streets of Washington
in his Pope mobile.

Teri Okita bridge/Washington, D.C:

Thousands of well-wishers began lining
the Pope's parade route early this

morning...jockeying for the best

position to get a glimpse of the
Pontiff as

he rode by.

Houston residents Ricardo and Martha
Villasenor made their first plane

trip EVER to be here.

Martha Villasenor/Catholic:

But not everyone is applauding the
Pontiff. Demonstrators were out too

...voicing their opposition to
controversial Church policies and the
sex abuse

scandal.

Carlos Gonzalez/Protestor The Pope is
almost certain to see more
demonstrations as he continues

his six day American trip but the vast
majority say this is a historic event

that can't be missed. Teri Okita, CBS
News, Washington
