Boteoturt County.
Steven Carter was killed last
Thanksgiving.

in prison.
Payne apologized to Carter's
family for the deadly confrontation at
an apartment complex in Cloverdale.

the state...with the impact felt as far
away as Kentucky and Missouri.
While California residents might
dismiss it as a "tremor," geologists
say the quake was fairly large for the
area.
The last earthquake in the region
close to the strength of the one this
morning was a five-point-oh magnitude
quake back in 2002.

Families are still avoiding the
area after a man was murdered here
Saturday.
But residents like Theresa Carter
are trying to bring back a sense of
safety.
Theresa Carter: "It's a good
neighborhood. We've got good people
here. If they didn't I wouldn't be
here."
Police are now making regular
trips by the park - something Carter
and her neighbors requested.
Lt. John Henderson: "Whenever the
beat car has a free moment, and he's
not answering a call or anything like
that, he's going to go by there."
"I think that's going to deter
anyone that would come over thinking of
doing something they should not be
doing."
But to really stop the crime,
residents like Brenda Harrington say it
will take more.
Brenda Harrington: "Right now,
you know, people are scared, and it's
going to take an atmosphere, or create
an atmosphere where they will come back
to the park."
"Cleaning up the park is one way
neighbors say will improve safety.
They'd like to see this brush cut down,
so that criminals won't have a place to
hide."
"Who knows. It could be crooks
hiding in the woods right now. They
can see us, but we can't see them, you
know?"
Cater is working with local
churches to start a neighborhood watch
program.
"Then, when anybody drives
through, the community is active in the
park, and when they see people here, if
you're here to do anything that you
don't have any business, you're going
to keep on going."
"We want to continue this for
right now and, you know, make it a safe
place."

Virginia Green is a program that
awards certification to
tourism-related business that take
voluntary actions to reduce
harmful impacts on the environment.
To be certified "green," a business
must commit to
waste-reducing activities, such as
recycling, purchase
environmentally friendly products, and
other steps that are kind to
the environment.
DEQ plans to expand Virginia Green
to include wineries, golf
courses and Virginia's welcome centers
and rest areas.
The Web site VirginiaGreenTravel.org
was introduced today.
The site also has links to outdoor
adventure programs, the Virginia
Birding and Wildlife Trail,
eco-friendly events and travel tips.

This dog and sheep are inseparable..
The pair was spotted near a freeway
Tuesday morning in California.
A driver pulled over to pick up the
pup-- but the sheep jumped into the
backseat, too.
The unusual duo is now living
together at an animal shelter...

field again next fall...this time
across state lines in West Virginia.

Ore will take his game to West
Liberty State College in Wheeling.
The Hilltoppers are a NCAA
division two member that plays in the
West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference with the likes of Concord,
Shepherd and Glenville State. There
are 16 members in the conference.
Last year the Toppers finished
their season 8 and 3.
If his paperwork goes through and
he's admitted - Ore will be playing at
nearby Concord this coming season in a
road game on September 13th.

Greenberg is busy this offseason. He
was in Portsmouth last week to watch
Deron Washington in the Portsmouth
Invitational, following a trip to the
Final Four.
In between he's done a little
recruiting and some offseason
conditioning with his team. But last
night, he was giving his time

Greenberg was the featured speaker at
the annual fundraiser for the
Martinsville and Henry County Boys and
Girls Clubs at the Chatmoss Country
Club. Close to 10 thousand dollars was
raised at the dinner and silent
auction.

importance of community, and his
passion for young people.

beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 in the
longest game in the majors in nearly 15
years.
The game took 6-hours, 16-minutes.
Kip Wells was the winning pitcher with
four shutout innings of relief as the
eighth Rockies pitcher.
Only a fraction of the crowd of
25,984 was around to see the final out.
There was a seventh-inning stretch,
a 14-inning stretch and finally, a
21st-inning stretch at Petco Park.
