tonight.

It all has to do with proposed
cuts to the fire department.

Justin, what effects could the cuts
have on public safety?

firefighters believe the cuts could end
up putting lives and properties in
danger.

A large group of firefighters
showed up tonight to plead their case
to city council.

The fire department, like all
city departments, has been ordered to
reduce their budgets for next year.

As a result, the fire department
plans to take an engine out of service
and then eliminate one administrative
position as well as six uniform
positions.

night it was parents sounding off.

But despite opposition the Roanoke City
School Board voted to close Forest Park
Elementary and change it into an
over-age academy.

One of the major reasons for
choosing Forest Park is its' size.

Forest Park would be able to
accomodate the large number of over-age
students.

The school board also said the
cost to convert the school would be
low.

And they liked the layout.... The
school is self-contained and enclosed
rather than an open-style campus.

moments before he was gunned down in a
Salem parking lot..... And the man

believed to be the shooter has
confessed.

That information revealed
in a search warrant-

VO-NAT Brian Stuart Sheppard told a

sheriff's deputy that he had "shot a
man in Salem 15 times."

The deputy had taken Sheppard
into custody after hearing a "be on the
lookout" call from Salem police.

Meanwhile the victim James
Richard Fleshman, Jr. made a phone call
to Salem police to report a
confrontation with Sheppard in the
parking lot of the Food Lion on
Wildwood Road.

According to the warrant,
Fleshman's call was disconnected and a
few moments later calls began to come
in about the shooting.

Fleshman died in the parking lot.

Afghanistan.

killed in action last month.

While at VMI, he served as an
assistant Marine officer instructor.

Mercardante was an acting

Expeditionary Unit.

he had his heart attack.

Center. Look for clear skies Thursday

50s. After a mild start to Friday,
highs climb to the lower 80s Friday
afternoon with mostly sunny skies.
While Friday will be dry, we'll be
watching a cold front in the
Mississippi River Valley that will
attempt to bring us showers over the
weekend. Friday night skies will be
partly cloudy with lows in the mid and
upper 50s. For the most part, Saturday
looks partly sunny, with only a chance
of an isolated shower in the afternoon.
Highs are slated near 80. There's a
better chance of scattered showers
Saturday night with lows in the mid
50s. The front will be sluggish moving
east, so Sunday looks mostly cloudy
with scattered showers - not an all day
rain, however. Afternoon highs should
manage the mid 70s. Next week, we have
variably cloudy conditions forecast
Monday through Wednesday with a 20%
chance of showers each day. Right now,
highs look to be around 70 with lows in

prostitution ring in Washington, D.C.
has committed suicide.

VO-NAT Police say Deborah Jeane Palfrey,

known as the D-C Madam, was found dead
in Florida today.

She left notes but police haven't
disclosed their contents.

Her mother found the body.

Palfrey was convicted in April of
running a prostitution service catering
to Washington's elite.

She was awaiting sentencing with
a potential of 50 years in jail.
