students at Roanoke City Schools next
year.

school board meeting where members
voted on changes.

morning was about where to put the new
over-age academy....a school for
students older than the average age.
The school board chairman says
the final decision to close down Forest
Park Elementary school was not an easy
one.
But in the end-- the Board made
its' decision to move forward on the
proposal.

After an hour long meeting this
morning-- the Roanoke City School Board
voted 4 to 3 in favor of re-purposing
Forest Park Elementary.
The proposal sparked much debate
among board members.
Board Member Courtney Penn
suggested moving the over-age academy
into Oakland Intermediate.
He said even though the school
can't accomodate as many students as
Forest Park-- it would be a good place
to try out an "over-age academy"
without having to relocate hundreds of
students.
But in the end Board members
decided Forest Park was the most
practical location.

The board says another benefit
would be erasing the school's current
standing.
For the past few years Forest
Park has not met state and federal
standards for S-O-L testing. Closing it
down would eliminate the possibility of
sanctions.
Forest Park students would be
moved to a variety of different
schools.

The high rent for the Noel C
Taylor academy was also up for
discussion. The board is trying to
get out of its current lease and move

Police say the man charged
with murder in a grocery story parking
lot confessed to the crime.

VO-NAT The warrant, filed today in
Montgomery County court, says Brian
Stuart Sheppard told a sheriff's deputy
that he had "shot a man in Salem 15
times."
*CG file Tuesday The deputy had taken Sheppard into
custody after Salem police put out a
"be on the lookout" call.
That call came about 20 minutes
after the shooting that took the life
of James Richard Fleshman, Junior in a
parking lot on Wildwood Road.
Sheppard had a gun when he was
taken into custody.

bank in Roanoke Monday. now they just
need to find him.

Police say the woman convicted of

may be dead.

say a body they believe to be 52 year
old Deborah Jeane Palfrey was found in
a shed near her mother's mobile home
this morning.
She left a suicide note but police
did not disclose what it said.
Paltrey was convicted earlier this
month of running a prostitution service
that catered to Washington's elite---
she denied that her escort service
engaged in prostitution.

(END SOT) more than just fixing what you can see.
"The number one thing I think
this community needs is to move the
drugs out of Rivermont."
John Smith knows that to do that,
he'll have to make neighbors care more
about where they live.
That's why he and 400 other
volunteers are hosting a "Day of
Difference."
Despite the name, it's actually
several weeks of events designed to
enhance lower Rivermont.
"It's just a wide variety of
things for children and their families
to participate in."
Setting up tables is only the
beginning.
The real work, they say, will be
filling up this tent with people who
want to change their neighborhood.
"We want to make it so that we
are working together, and we're
building things together, and we're
revitalizing the community together."
Day of difference is about more
than just improving Rivermont. It's
about putting a better face on this
community, so the rest of the city can
see that crime and violence aren't the
only things happening here.
"Unfortunately when you hear
things about this area, it's not always
positive. But this is something that
is very positive."
As part of Day of Difference,
residents will have access to free and
low-cost health care.
They'll be fixing up this house
on Dinwiddie Street with Habitat for
Humanity.
"The main thing is for them to
know that someone cares about this
community."
And want to make it a safer place
to live.

Univeristy in South Carolina.
Nymeyer is the first athlete to

will plans on majoring in Sports
Management.
