Western Virginia, search and rescue
dogs are often called in to help.
Right now, the closest dogs are
in Charlottesville, but a group in
Pittsylvania County is training a local
team to help.

Saunders has their story.

County and rescue for more than a decade.
(END SOT) Annie Clark: "I remember the very
first search I ever went on. It was a
lady that was lost down toward Axton.
And I think they searched. I know I
went out for three days."
The women was never found.
Clark says having a team of
search dogs could have made a
difference.
Now Clark is part of ATT Search
Dogs - a group that's training rescue
animals specifically for our region.
Joanne Kuchinski: "If there's a
search anywhere in the state of
Virginia, we could be called out. We
also could be called out by the local
law enforcement." 16:49:04
But first, they have to get
certified with the state.
To get there, the dogs have to
learn how to find people using scents.
Joanne Kuchinski: "You give them
a scent article. And then they try to
go out and find the person who's
article they smelled."
Training these dogs is not easy.
It can take up to two years and every
step of the process has to be
documented. But trainers say the
benefits to this region will make it
all worth it.
Joanne Kuchinski: "It's a lot of
time and commitment and we pay for it
all out of our own pocket."
That includes harnesses and vests
that cost more than a hundred dollars.
The group is looking for help and
donations - but more importantly, they
need more dogs.
Annie Clark: "The more people we
can get interested and involved, the
more success we'll have."
And when it comes to search and

this afternoon.

"Turning Point" unveiled its' new
children's area filled with books and
games.
The non-profit organization,
"Bright Horizons Foundation for
Children" along with the Wachovia
Foundation transformed the living room
space into a play room called "bright
space."
The shelter temporarily provides
a home for battered women and children.

The pairings for the ACC-Big Ten
challenge in December were made
official today. The Hokies will play
the first game in the first off 11
games as they host Wiscinson. It will
mark the first time the two schools
have played in basketball.
That game is December 1st and on
December 2nd the Virginia Cavaliers
will play at Minnesota.
The ACC has never lost the
competition in its 9 years of
exisitence.

Team, but their climb this afternoon on
the Mill Mountain Star wasn't about the

Today, they were preparing for
the Rescue Challenge that will bring
technical rescue teams from around the
state to several locations in the
Roanoke Valley next week.

replace its 20 year old bus with a
newer one.
To help raise money they've
organized a penny-pitch for tomorrow's
Chili Cookoff in downtown Roanoke.
The school serves nearly 300
children, ages 3-through-12.
The bus is used to take students
to-and-from their public city schools
in the morning and afternoons.
They've set a goal of collecting
one million pennies Saturday at the
Chili Cookoff.
That's ten-thousand dollars.
