before 11 on Friday night. Roanoke
Police say a driver struck a man while
he was walking on Williamson.
He was taken to the hospital where he
later died.
BECAUSE OF THE PROXIMITY OF SHOPS IN
THIS AREA MANY PEOPLE ARE ON FOOT.
Kenton Jones says the area needs more
police.
THIS IS AN INNER CITY ROAD AND THEIR
DEFINITELY NOT TRAVELING 25 OR 30 MILES
AN HOUR, I FEEL THERE SHOULD BE POLICE
INTERVENTION ESPECIALLY IN THIS AREA--
JUST TO MONITOR TRAFFIC PATTERNS.
Residents who live and work in this
area say pedestrian traffic is just as
common as car traffic-- so they're not
surprised this happenend.

crash in Campbell County early this
morning.
State police say the accident
happened around 6:30 on Route 460, near
Route 24 in Concord.
James Holmes, a 16-year-old from
Appomattox died at the scene.
He was the passenger in the car -
which ran off the road and slammed into
a tree.
There is no word on the condition
of the driver.

be laid to rest tommorrow afternoon.

week after a short battle with cancer.
His funeral will be at Whitten's
Funeral Home on South Amerherst
Highway.
Because space is limited...the
Lynchburg Police Department is asking
non-family members to pay their respect
by lining the sidewalks on Court Street
between 5th and 12th.
Or by standing in the parking
lots along South Amherst Highway
between Seminole and Whitten's Funeral
Home.
This will be the route for the
funeral procession.
The procession will happen

In New Mexico a wildfire has
burned at least 13 thousand acres and
at this point no one knows how many
homes its ruined.
Firefighters finally got a break
before the start of the weekend from
heavy winds that have been fanning the
flames.
About 400 to 500 people have
evacuated the area - but some are
refusing to leave.
This fire's been burning since
the middle of last month and is only
about 30 percent contained.

shot and killed him.

One of the alleged bank robbers

plane survived a crash landing in a
river.

The plane plunged last night into
the Catawba River in Lancaster County,
South Carolina.
The couple and two dogs were
headed to Port St. Lucie, Florida when
the engine died.
The plane nosedived into the
river.
The two used life preservers as
they waited for help. The wife opened
the plane's doors and let the dogs swim
out.
The couple and dogs were rescued
by two fishermen.

Valley threw a duck Derby Race this

Five thousand rubber ducks were

He won the grand prize of
one-thousand dollars.

Another school benefiting big
time this weekend is the Community
School in Roanoke.
That's where all of the proceeds
from the Strawberry Festival in Elmwood
Park went.
Strawberry shortcake or chocolate
covered strawberries...you name it.
It was all at arms reach.
This is the 28th year this
particular event has been satisfying
sweet tooths here in the Valley.

tonight in the state capital in the
Crown Royal 400. Denny Hamlin was
looking for the weekend sweep after
taking the checkers in Friday night's
Nationwide race. The native of nearby
Chesterfield was nearly untouchable
tonight leading every lap but one until
there were 18 to go. Hamlin had a tire
go down late, and he was passed by Dale
Earnhardt, Jr. and Kyle Busch.
The race was red flagged past
the halfway point after an 11 car
pileup, triggered when Dave Blaney got
together with JJ Yeley.
The laps are winding down at
RIR. With under 10 laps to go Junior
got turned by Busch. Clint Bowyer
