but that's exactly what happened just
before 11 on Friday night. Roanoke
Police say a driver struck a man while
he was walking on Williamson.
He was taken to the hospital where he
later died.
BECAUSE OF THE PROXIMITY OF SHOPS IN
THIS AREA MANY PEOPLE ARE ON FOOT.
Kenton Jones says the area needs more
police.
THIS IS AN INNER CITY ROAD AND THEIR
DEFINITELY NOT TRAVELING 25 OR 30 MILES
AN HOUR, I FEEL THERE SHOULD BE POLICE
INTERVENTION ESPECIALLY IN THIS AREA--
JUST TO MONITOR TRAFFIC PATTERNS.
Residents who live and work in this
area say pedestrian traffic is just as
common as car traffic-- so they're not
surprised this happenend.

weather....

This week's storms spawned

It happened a little before nine
on Westover Drive.
Witnesses say Mark Randall Oakes
lost control of his bike and hit a
utility pole.
The 47-year-old died at the

be laid to rest tommorrow afternoon.

week after a short battle with cancer.
His funeral will be at Whitten's
Funeral Home on South Amerherst
Highway.
Because space is limited...the
Lynchburg Police Department is asking
non-family members to pay their respect
by lining the sidewalks on Court Street
between 5th and 12th.
Or by standing in the parking
lots along South Amherst Highway
between Seminole and Whitten's Funeral
Home.
This will be the route for the
funeral procession.
The procession will happen
sometime between 12:30 and 1:15

Georgia -- may soon be getting longer.
A group is working to get the
Appalachian trail extended into the
foothills of Alabama.
Currently it runs from Maine to
Springer Mountain, Georgia.

major makeover...

officers are on the streets for what is

for a charitable cause.

Valley threw a duck Derby Race this
afternoon.
Five thousand rubber ducks were
dumped into the Roanoke River.
Then anyone could come and adopt
one.
The proceeds will go to a number
of local non profit organizations as

Hospital.

Zeus Chili Don Van Lehn (Van
Lane) won the grand prize of

event, which benefits the Greenvale
School.
People also threw money in the
back of an old school bus to contribute
towards a new one.

Strawberry Festival in Elmwood Park

event, which benefits the Community
School in Roanoke.

a new boys basketball coach last week,

girls coach.
Mike McGuire is leaving the
Titans program to become an assistant
at the University of Richmond.

seasons. The 31 year old McGuire had a
