CAM Police are investigating a

It happened at the
intersection of... Sycamore and
Williamson road...around 11 last night.
The male pedestrian had
been struck by car. The driver had
already left the scene.
The man was taken to Carilion
Roanoke Memorial hospital, where he
later died. His identity has not been
released.

It happened a little before 9:00
on Westover Drive.
Witnesses say... 47 year old Mark
Randall Oakes... of Danville lost
control of his motorcycle and hit a
utility pole.
Mr. Oakes was pronounced dead at
the scene.

disaster assistance.... to help rebuild
from a string of tornadoes.... that
swept through the state on Monday.
The Virginia Department of
Emergency Management... says most of
the homes and businesses that were
destroyed or damaged were INSURED...
falling short of the "threshold"
required to declare a federal disaster.
The Federal Emergency Management
Agency.... cannot DUPLICATE coverage
provided by private insurance
companies.
The National Weather Service now
says at least... 10 tornadoes... struck
Virginia on Monday.
More than 200 people were
injured, but NO ONE was killed.

Right now... the closest dogs are
in Charlottesville...but a group in
Pittsylvania County is training a local
team to help.

(END SOT) Annie Clark: "I remember the very
first search I ever went on. It was a
lady that was lost down toward Axton.
And I think they searched. I know I
went out for three days."
The women was never found.
Clark says having a team of
search dogs could have made a
difference.
Now Clark is part of ATT Search
Dogs - a group that's training rescue
animals specifically for our region.
Joanne Kuchinski: "If there's a
search anywhere in the state of
Virginia, we could be called out. We
also could be called out by the local
law enforcement." 16:49:04
But first, they have to get
certified with the state.
To get there, the dogs have to
learn how to find people using scents.
Joanne Kuchinski: "You give them
a scent article. And then they try to
go out and find the person who's
article they smelled."
Training these dogs is not easy.
It can take up to two years and every
step of the process has to be
documented. But trainers say the
benefits to this region will make it
all worth it.
Joanne Kuchinski: "It's a lot of
time and commitment and we pay for it
all out of our own pocket."
That includes harnesses and vests
that cost more than a hundred dollars.
The group is looking for help and
donations - but more importantly, they
need more dogs.
Annie Clark: "The more people we
can get interested and involved, the
more success we'll have."
And when it comes to search and
rescue, success can mean saving a life.

with a star on the Hollywood Walk of
Fame yesterday.
The star makes Combs the first
male rap artist to be "immortalized" in
such a way.
Fellow entertainment mogul
Russell Simmons and other artists were
on hand to support Combs.
Academy Award winning actor Jamie
Foxx was also there and told the crowd
that Combs is quite a man.
