This past Thursday- the Roanoke City
School Board voted to close down Forest
Park Elementary. Starting in the fall--
the campus is set to open its' doors as
an academy for students at risk of not
graduating.
with low S-O-L scores--the current
elementary school has not met state or
federal accreditation standards.
Closing it down would eliminate the
possibility of penalties-- P-T-A
president Lavita Washington says but
with the right resources-- it wouldn't
even be an issue.

person has died after being hit by a
car.

Police say Lorenzo Coley, who was
44, was killed around 3:30 this
morning.
He was trying to cross Hardy Road
in Roanoke County when authorities say
a driver -- a juvenile- ran into him.
Police have not said who was at
fault.
They do say the victim was
wearing dark clothes and was walking
with his back toward oncoming traffic.
Both the driver and victim are
from Bedford County.

identified the man killed in a hit and
run accident on Friday
Bernard Abram is the victim.
He was hit near the intersection
of Williamson Road and Sycamore Avenue.
Police are still looking for

teenager from Appomattox this weekend.

Sixteen-year-old James Holmes
and his brother were on their way home
from a chaperoned after-party following
a junior- senior banquet at Lynchburg
Christian Academy early Saturday
morning.
State Police say 18-year-old
Charles Holmes fell asleep at the wheel
on Route 460.
His brother James died after the
car flipped and hit a tree.
Both were wearing seat belts.
Today Thomas Road Baptist Church
held a special Sunday school service.

this morning.
The victim was pulling into her
job...
on Piney Forest Road when a man
came up to her and forced her into the
passengers seat.
Then, authorities say he drove
from Danville to North Carolina and
finally let the woman go about an hour
later on Interstate 85.
The victim was never hurt but
police want to find this man.

The Roanoke School Board's plan to
repurpose an elementary school upset
some city residents. Georgia Martin
says it's the system that needs new
purpose.
"If they would delve deeper and look at
the problems, they would see that
closing Forest Park in favor of an over
age academy is certainly not the
answer," Martin wrote. "Overhauling our
entire educational system for the
Roanoke Valley, starting from the
School Board to Central Administration
on down to the Principals and the
faculty is needed."

have died.

Details of the damage have been
difficult to get since the storm's
120-mile-per-hour winds toppled phone
lines and roads are blocked because of
all the debris.

Carolina boarder counties. Highs are

Tuesday looks sunny and pleasant with
only occasional passing clouds. Highs
are forecast in the mid 70s as low
level winds turn more from the
southwest.
Our next area of low pressure affects
the area mid week. Wednesday calls for
increasingly cloudy skies with a 30%
chance of afternoon showers and
thunderstorms. Thursday looks similar.
Right now, Friday will likely start
cloudy with showers, with some
afternoon clearing. High temperatures
will warm to the lower 80s Wednesday
and Thursday.
