This past Thursday- the Roanoke City
School Board voted to close down Forest
Park Elementary. Starting in the fall--
the campus is set to open its' doors as
an academy for students at risk of not
graduating.
with low S-O-L scores--the current
elementary school has not met state or
federal accreditation standards.
Closing it down would eliminate the
possibility of penalties-- P-T-A
president Lavita Washington says but
with the right resources-- it wouldn't
even be an issue.

STUDENTS STRUGGLE WITH, THERE'S ONLY 1,
IF THE PROPER RESOURCES WE'RE PUT INTO
THE SCHOOL TO HELP THE STUDENTS, MEET

parents are hanging on to hope that
some new faces in office will turn

if elected Mayor ton Tuesday.

another person has died after being hit
by a car.

Police say Lorenzo Coley, who was
44, was killed around 3:30 this
morning.
He was trying to cross Hardy Road
in Roanoke County when police say a
driver -- a juvenile- ran into him.
Authorities have not said who was
at fault.
They do say the victim was
wearing dark clothing and was walking
with his back toward oncoming traffic.
Both the driver and victim are
from Bedford County.

Roanoke.
Someone struck Bernard Abram near
the intersection of Williamson Road and
Sycamore Avenue late Friday night.
He later died at the hospital.

involved in the accident.

Sixteen-year-old James Holmes
and his brother were on their way home
from a chaperoned after-party following
a junior- senior banquet at Lynchburg
Christian Academy early Saturday
morning.
State Police say 18-year-old
Charles Holmes fell asleep at the wheel
on Route 460.
James died after the car flipped
and hit a tree.
Both were wearing seat belts.
Today Thomas Road Baptist Church
held a special Sunday school service.

this morning.
The victim was pulling into her
job...
on Piney Forest Road when a man
came up to her and forced her into the
passengers seat.
Then, authorities say he drove
from Danville to North Carolina and
finally let the woman go about an hour
later on Interstate 85.
The victim was never hurt but
police want to find this man.

The Roanoke School Board's plan to
repurpose an elementary school upset
some city residents. Georgia Martin
says it's the system that needs new
purpose.
"If they would delve deeper and look at
the problems, they would see that
closing Forest Park in favor of an over
age academy is certainly not the
answer," Martin wrote. "Overhauling our
entire educational system for the
Roanoke Valley, starting from the
School Board to Central Administration
on down to the Principals and the
faculty is needed."

blind Tibetian kids conquer a similiar
challenge.

teens climb a 23-thousand foot mountain

4 game set against Myrtle Beach with a
Sunday afternoon matinee. The Avs
needed to win the final game in order
to earn a split and be 2 and half games
back of the first place Pelicans.

started early. Ernesto Mejia picking up
where he left off last night, with a
triple to right centerfield. Tyler

Brandon Powell will bring Mejia home as
he singles to left centerfield and
Myrtle Beach had a 3 to nothing lead
before the Avs had even batted.
Salem would get 2 back in their
half of the first, Tim Torres will
match Mejia's triple with one of his
own to the gap in right center. Jordan
Parraz will come into score from second
and the lead was down to 3 to 1.
Jhon Florentino the next batter
for the Avs would make the productive

last night in Richmond in the closing
laps of the Crown Royal 400. Both
Denny Hamlin and then Dale Earnhardt,
Junior seemed to have a victory in
hand, only to have it taken away.

laps at his home track, but a leaky
tire eventually blew with 18 laps to
go, taking him out of the mix, placing
Junior and Kyle Busch in play.
But with just 3 to go, Busch
spun Junior in the corner to bring out
the caution. Clint Bowyer drove right
past them both and then held on to take
the checkered flag for the first time
this season. It's the second win of
Bowyer's Cup career.
