today.
Richard Miller, Virginia
Carroll and Patricia Hogan each

According to a Carilion spokesman
he's in serious but stable condition.

He says his brother and the other
victim took the day off to fish and met
the gunman on the Appalachian Trail
near Dismal Creek.
He also says his brother was
fortunate to survive.

would either spend the rest of his life
in prison or go to the electric chair
for killing the two hikers 27 years
ago.
But the authorities were never
been able to find the murder weapons
back in 1981.

bodies were found.
But he wasn't talking.
As the investigation continued,
it turned out the case was resolved by
the defense... when Smith's lawyers
sent him away for a psychiatric exam.

THEY JUST STOPPED THE INTERVIEW AND

BECAUSE THEY KNEW THAT HE WAS GUILTY.

OQ= The Commonwealth's Attorney felt
a plea agreement beat risking an
acquittal, if the case had gone to
trial.
While there were indications
Smith was with Susan Ramsay and Bob
Mountford the night before they were
murdered, there was little physical
evidence directly linking him to the
crime.
So Prosecutor Osborne struck a
compromise, allowing Smith to plead
guilty to SECOND- degree murder.
The Pearisburg native was
sentenced to 30 years in prison.
He was paroled in 1996- -having
served about half his time... standard
procedure for a case in the 1980's.>>

yesterday's gun scare at the University
of Richmond.

arrested a 19 year old man from Henrico
County for the incident that led to a
four-hour campus lockdown yesterday.
The campus was shut down while
police searched for a man reportedly
seen with a handgun.
Witnesses said the man wore a
fake beard and a dark-colored jacket
with the word "sheriff" on the back.

The man shown in these
surveillence photos reportedly went
into the Whitetop branch of Grayson
National bank yesterday and demanded
money.
He was armed with a handgun, and
held tellers in the back of the bank
before he took the money and ran.
He is described as approximately
sixty years old and is about six foot
tall and 180 pounds.
No one was hurt in the robbery.

<< Good evening, I'm meteorologist
Robin Reed in the SkyTracker7 Forecast
Center. Not as cool tonight with
clouds increasing and a southerly
breeze at 10-15mph. Lows are forecast
near 60. A warm front will be north
of the NEWS7 viewing area Thursday;
keeping us in the "warm sector" of air.
South winds are expected around
10-15mph with gusts near 25mph. Highs
are forecast in the mid and upper 70s.
Expect sun and clouds, with shower and
thunderstorm chances developing during
the afternoon. Storm chances are best
across the Piedmont where more sun and
instability are expected. A few
afternoon and early evening storms
could turn strong to severe.
Additionally, heavy rain may develop
late Thursday - although it's possible
the heaviest rain stays just north of
the area. Lows Thursday night are
slated near 60. As the system departs,
showers early Friday will exit, with
clearing in the afternoon. Friday will
probably be breezy. Westerly winds may
gust to 25mph. Highs in the mid 70s.
Mother's Day weekend looks like a split
decision. Saturday appears pretty sunny
right now, with showers and
thunderstorms returning Sunday. Highs
this weekend in the lower 70s.

Memorial Golf Tournament is all set to
tee off at the Roanoke Country Club
next weekend.

participant Vicki Kasza has earned an
invitation to the NCAA Division III
Women's Golf Championships.
Kasza played at Cave Spring and
is now leading the golf team at
Hollins.
Kasza was selected to compete
based on her ranking in the final NCAA
standings. The tournament will take
place May 13th through the 16th at the
Centennial Country Club in Waverly
Iowa.
