(END SOT) has lived in Sandy Level, she's seen a
lot of storms.
But none as powerful as the one
she lived through Thursday night.
"It sounded like someone was
hitting the house with rocks on top of
rocks. And all of a sudden it was just
a boom! And I said 'Oh my lord!'"
Mahan's daughter Janet Mease was
at a party when she saw the weather
reports - and a possible tornado -
headed straight for her mother's house.
She called to warn her about what
was happening.
"And then all of a sudden she
yelled out and the phone went dead. Of
course I panicked, thinking the tornado
had hit her house."
Mahan made it through unharmed.
She rode out the the storm in a
closet as the winds outside pulled up
trees and lifted her storage shed off
its foundation.
"I really wasn't afraid. I felt
like the Lord was watching over me."
Other than a large crack in the
wall, her home wasn't damaged.
But outside?
"Looked like a war zone. It's
unreal."
What was a forest of trees is now
a field of broken limbs.

Across the street, neighbors saw
up one tree after another.
A big mess that thankfully didn't
injure anyone.
"You see it on TV, and of course
we've seen it recently, but it's really
horrifying when you have to go through
it."
But now that they have gone
through it, they're just grateful
everyone's safe.

was killed near Greensboro, North
Carolina when the wind turned over his
pickup truck.

emergency relief getting to the victims
of the recent cyclone.

to deliver relief supplies.
The Red Cross says the combined
effort of relief agencies and Myanmar's

helicopters and most are small and old.

two campers in Giles County now faces
charges.

one for attempted capital murder, were
taken out today against Randall Lee
Smith. That's according to the Giles
County sheriff.
Investigators believe Smith
shot two men in the Dismal Creek area
of Giles County, stole a truck and
crashed it.
At last report, Smith was still
in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

After six years of delays, they are
finally picking a jury in singer R.
Kelly's child pornography trial.

postponed yet again today, but the
judge refused the request.
Kelly had to pass a crowd of people,
some shouting "I love you!", others
shouting "R. Kelly's a pedophile" to

courtroom.
Kelly is accused of having sex with a
girl as young as 13 on video.
However, the alleged victim, who's
now 23, says she isn't the girl in the
video and Kelly's attorney's haven't
admitted
it's their client in the video, either.

of the court today on charges of
felony reckless driving.

Hulk Hogan was arrested in Florida in
November, after a car crash left his
friend seriously injured.
Authorities say Bollea was accused
of racing another car at high speeds,

John Graziano was left with
permenant brain damage from the
accident.
Bollea was sentenced to eight
months in jail and 500 hours of
community service.

Valley will find some slow traffic this
weekend on Interstate 81 and Route 460.
Repair work near the Ironto exit has

Center. A storm survey conducted by
the National Weather Service in
Blacksburg confirms a tornado touched
down in Henry and Franklin Counties
last night. This is the second tornado
reported in the NEWS7 viewing area in

Numerous trees were downed and four
homes damaged. The tornado touched down
near state route 886 in Henry County at
8:00pm, and lifted at routes 618 and
632 in Franklin County. Also last
night, many hometowns picked up
1.00-2.00" of rain. Some locations
received 3.00-5.00". Needless to say,
this caused flooding problems. While
most rivers and creeks have crested,
pay attention to swift moving water
through Saturday. Also, watch for
debris on roadways until crews remove
things like limbs, trees and loose
gravel from Thursday's late storms.
REST OF FRIDAY: Expect more clouds than
sun. Temperatures are forecast in the
mid 70s. Westerly breezes around
15-20mph with higher gusts. Some
creeks, streams and rivers may be
moving swiftly due to last night's
heavy rain. FRIDAY NIGHT: Winds will
eventually relax after a breezy
evening. Skies will be mostly cloudy as
an upper level disturbance rotates
toward us from the Ohio River Valley.
This feature could produce scattered
showers, but severe storms will not be
a problem. Low temperatures are
forecast in the low 50s. SATURDAY:
After morning clouds and perhaps a few
light showers, increasing sunshine is
expected. It should turn out to be a
rather nice day with highs near 70 and
a refreshing northwesterly breeze.
After a clear evening, clouds will
return Saturday night with lows around
50. MOTHER'S DAY SUNDAY: Could Sunday
be stormy, again? Right now, we'll
monitor for more rain and storms
beginning Sunday afternoon into Sunday
night. A strong jet stream will be
overhead, which could create more
strong storms. With saturated ground
from recent rains, we'll have to watch
for the potential of flooding. Stay

the running of the Dodge Challenger
500. But this week's race won't be the
same old dance with the Lady in Black.
The surface at the track was
recently repaved, which should make for
some super fast laps on Saturday night.
Jeff Gordon did a tire test on the new
pavement just a few weeks ago and some
of speeds reached 200 miles an hour.

Tug for Tots fundraiser today on the
athletic fields on Reserve Avenue in
Roanoke.

has managed to coax area businesses to
field a Tug of War team to complete in
a double elimination competition.
Each team pays a thousand dollars
to enter and all of the proceeds are
used to help provide health care for
children in the valley who wouldn't
normally be able to afford it.
This year's event was also
highlighted by two six-foot seven inch
referees - UVA men's basketball coach
Dave Leitao and Delegate William
Fralin.

Stocks faded under the weight of rising

credit crunch. The Dow lost 120 points

It wasn't easy being green for
Kermit the Frog, but imagine being born
as a green DOG.

That's the case for one newborn
puppy in Louisiana.
An SPCA spokesperson says there
is a reasonable scientific explanation
for the puppy's unusual color.
Sometimes, as the puppy is being
born, the amniotic fluid mixes with the
placenta and "dyes" the coat of the
puppy.
The discoloration is only
temporary.
