knocked unconscious last night by a man
who was trying to avoid getting
arrested.

Around 11:30 police were
stationed on corners thoughout
Northeast Roanoke looking for the
suspect.
Originally they got a call about
two men being disorderly at a
convenience store on Williamson Road.
In the course of all the action
there was a foot chase.

caught one of the suspect's which is
when police say William Steele Junior,
an 18-year-old knocked the officer out.
Steele was finally arrested along
with the other man he was with Dontonio
Foster.
As for the police officer who was

robbed a sandwich shop at gunpoint last
night - and police say there's still no
sight of them.
Authorities tell us the suspects
were wearing ski masks when they hit up
the Quizno's on Forest Road around 10
o'clock.
The robber's made the employees
get on the ground before taking off
with cash and the restaurant's
telephone.
No one was hurt.

hoping to learn more about an accused
murderer who died in jail over the
weekend.

Randall Lee Smith's body will be
sent to the medical examiner's office
in Roanoke on Monday.
He was found dead in his jail
cell yesterday.
The Giles County Sheriff's Office
says there was no evidence of suicide,
but that Smith did say he did NOT want
to live.
Smith was accused of shooting two
campers along the Appalachian Trail
last week.
He was also convicted of killing
two hikers in 1981.
Officials say they are still
investigating the recent shootings.

the speed bump they asked for.
This -- more than three months
after a runner was hit and killed in
that part of town.

Wisconsin, killing all three people on

and Franklin counties before moving off
to the east.
A large low pressure system and cold
front will pass through overnight.
Until it moves east, there's still a
chance for showers and storms into the
evening.
Winds increase later tonight as that
same low pressure strengthens near the
Virginia coast. Expect westerly winds
around 10-20mph with gusts closer to
45mph. Since soils are saturated, winds
of this magnitude could topple trees
and bring down power lines. Lows are
forecast in the mid to upper 40s Sunday
night.
The gusty winds continue Monday,
especially across the western viewing
area. Northwesterly gusts could
approach 45mph, especially for the
first half of the day. Highs are
expected in the lower 60s. Skies will
be variably cloudy. A few light showers
are possible; mainly in the western
mountains.
Tuesday is sunny and pleasant before
more shower chances arrive for the rest
of the week.

headed back to the NCAA Tournament
after winning a second consecutive ACC
Championship this afternoon in College
Park.
The Hokies will head to the
Knoxville regional this week. Tech
will play Louisville in the opening
game. Tennessee and Winthrop are
the other two teams in the regional.
As for the conference title

round of the NCAA Lacrosse Tournament.
Today, the Hoos were hoping to

in a game that was delayed 40 minutes

in position for just his 3rd career win
in 15 years today at the Players
Championship.

challenging island green at 17 where
Goydos hit a wedge that got hung up in

Sergio safely found the

career. The 28 year old Garcia pocketed
