Stafford County where people are
calling this their ground zero.
Many are just getting a first
glimpse this weekend of the mess left
behind from Thursday's tornado.
It ripped apart 160 homes.

sustained minor injuries.

assaulting a Roanoke City Police
officer to the point where the officer
was unconscious.

At one point around 11:30 last
night police were stationed on almost
every corner in parts of Northeast
Roanoke.
Originially they got a call about
two men being disorderly at a convience
store on Williamson Road.
In the course of all the action
there was a foot chase.

caught one of the suspects which is
when police say William Steele Junior,
an 18-year-old knocked the officer
unconscious.
Steele was finally arrested along
with the other man he was with Dontonio
Foster.
As for the police officer who was

the Fas Mart on South Boston Road.
Authorities say two armed men
entered the store took a small amount
of cash and several lottery tickets
before leaving peacefully.

sandwich shop at gunpoint last night.
Police say the suspects were
wearing ski masks when they hit up the
Quizno's on Forest Road around 10
o'clock.
They made the employees get on
the ground before taking off with cash
and the restaurant's telephone.
No one was hurt.

accused of shooting two campers in
Giles County remains unknown.

Randall Lee Smith's body will be
sent in to a medical examiner's office
in Roanoke on Monday.
He was found dead in his jail
cell yesterday.
The Giles County Sheriff's Office
says there was no evidence of suicide,
but that Smith said he no longer wanted
to live.
He was accused of shooting two
campers along the Appalachian Trail
last week.
Smith was also convicted of
killing two hikers in 1981.
Officials say they are still
investigating the recent shootings.

Center. A line of storms developed
this afternoon under a very unstable
atmosphere. Several tornado warnings
were issued in central and southside,
but as of this update, no confirmed
tornadoes.
The strong storms did produce up to
1-inch size hail in Campbell, Roanoke
and Franklin counties before moving off
to the east.
A large low pressure system and cold
front will pass through overnight.
Until it moves east, there's still a
chance for showers and storms into the
evening.
Winds increase later tonight as that
same low pressure strengthens near the
Virginia coast. For that reason, a High
Wind Watch is in effect. Expect
westerly winds around 10-20mph with
gusts closer to 45mph. Since soils are
saturated, winds of this magnitude
could topple trees and bring down power
lines. Lows are forecast in the mid to
upper 40s Sunday night.
The gusty winds continue Monday,
especially across the western viewing
area. Northwesterly gusts could
approach 45mph, especially for the
first half of the day. Highs are
expected in the lower 60s. Skies will
be variably cloudy. A few light showers
are possible; mainly in the western
mountains.
Tuesday is sunny and pleasant before
more shower chances arrive for the rest
of the week.
