GRAPHIC=Randall Smith The man accused of shooting two

campers on the Appalachian trail in
Giles County earlier this week -- is
now dead.

Friday Night Authorities say they found
Randall Lee Smith by himself and
unresponsive in his jail cell around at
five o'clock yesterday afternoon.

Jail guards tried to revive him
and then took Smith to the hospital-
where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities with the Giles County
Sheriff's department say they found no
evidence of suicide and Smith's death
appears to be more of a medical
problem.

But Friday, the inmate said he
was ready for death.

Authorities hope to know more
after an autopsy on Smith is performed
in Roanoke.

Along with facing attempted
murder charges from this week...Smith
also served 15 years for killing two
hikers back in 1981.

He was held without bond in the
New River Valley Regional Jail.

apparently falling out of a jeep in
Roanoke County.

night in the 72-hundred block of Bent
Mountain Road.

Police say the 24-year-old was
found by responding officers in a ditch
near the side of the road.

She was taken to the hospital

It's not known whether alcohol

killed James Stokes outside the Afton
Garden Apartments on Hunt Avenue around
two o'clock yesterday afternoon.

The 29-year-old played for
Fleming in the mid-90s.

Authorities haven't made any
arrest.

April 24 Also in Lynchburg- a convienence

store clerk, who was badly hurt during
a robbery, is out of the hospital.

Abderrahin Elfilali Ab-dur-a-heen
Elle-fill-all-ee was shot in the head
while working at the Salem and Sons
Citgo on April 24th.

He was in critical condition for
nearly a week, but a hospital
spokesperson tells us he was able to go
home Thursday.

Six people are facing charges in
connection with that shooting.

robbery in Danville.

It happened last night at around
11:30 at the Fas Mart on South Boston
Road.

Two men allegedly entered the
store with guns and got away with a
small amount of cash and several
lottery tickets.

The clerk was alone in the store

at the time and no one was injured.

that destroyed part of the Long Mill
complex in Danville -- suspicious.

most local rivers are running at least
half bankfull, and more rain today
could certainly lead to flood concerns.
Stay away from swollen creeks, streams
and rivers for the next couple of days!
Temperatures for your Mother's Day will
be cool, in the lower 50s. Strong
storms are likely across the Carolinas
today. A few thunderstorms are possible
around here (mainly across Southside
and far southwestern Virginia). Severe
weather is not anticipated.

Winds increase tonight as low pressure
strengthens near the Virginia coast. A
High Wind Watch is in effect. Expect
westerly winds around 10-20mph with
gusts closer to 45mph. Since soils are
saturated, winds of this magnitude
could topple trees and bring down power
lines. Lows are forecast in the mid to
upper 40s Sunday night.

The pressure gradient is tight
Monday... that simply means expect more
wind... especially across the western
viewing area. Northwesterly gusts could
approach 45mph, especially for the
first half of the day. Highs are
expected in the lower 60s. Skies will
be variably cloudy. A few light showers
are possible; mainly in the western
mountains.

The killer storm system roared through
five states...starting in Kansas
northeastern Oklahoma and southwestern
Missouri.. with the swarm of tornados
came the hail...and when the clouds had
cleared cars were discovered strewn
upside down, many with occupants still
inside.

JUST STARTED FORMING, STARTED SPINNING,
AND WHEN IT GOT THRU FORMING WE RAN AND
GOT IN THE BATHTUB"

Throughout the area where the tornados
touched down - the devastation was
dramatic. In the mining town of Picher,
Oklahoma authorities say A full 20
block area - much of the small town -
was literally wiped out. SOT/Lt. George

Brown, Oklahoma Highway Patrol: "WE
HAVE THE SHERIFFS OFFICE HERE GOING
THROUGH THE PERIMETER TRYING TO FIND
PEOPLE WHO ARE INJURED AND GET THEM TO
MEDICAL TREATMENT."

As the storms moved across Oklahoma
toward the Missouri line the town of
McAllester took a direct hit.. as did

the surrounding farms. Many Homes were
leveled - right down to the foundation.

The storms had if anything intensified
by the time they reached Newton County
Missouri - the devastation near the
town of Seneca - some 15 miles east of
Picher - was horrific. Amidst the dead
were the injured, many airlifted to
hospitals in Joplin...while the storms
veered south and east, ripping through
parts of Arkansas and Tennessee, too...

campers on the Appalachian trail in
Giles county earlier this week -- is
now dead.

Friday Night Authorities say they found
Randall Lee Smith by himself and
unresponsive in his jail cell around at
five o'clock yesterday afternoon.

Jail guards tried to revive him
and then took Smith to the hospital

where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities with the Giles County
Sheriff's department say they found no
evidence of suicide and Smith's death
appears to be more of a medical
problem.

But Friday, the inmate said he
was ready for death.

about Smith's death once an autopsy is

apparently falling out of a jeep in
Roanoke County.

circumstance.

It's a song that signals a great
accomplishment.

But for one graduate at Lynchburg
college, it's a song he almost didn't
get to hear.

"This wasn't how I envisioned
this ending, but it was good."

Jason Early is a survivor.

Just six months ago, he and his
friend Sean Southerland were badly
injured in a plane crash that killed
Jason's Dad.

To see Jason up and walking for
his graduation, you'd never know
anything happened.

"We're certainly ahead of
schedule in terms of the recovery
process"

Early spent the last six months
at a Philadelphia rehab center -
learning how to walk again.

"The day I got in there, I
couldn't move at all. But by the time
I left a month later, I was walking
with a walker."

His doctors thought it might take
a year for him to get this far.

But his mother says he's too
strong for that.

"He just didn't want to wait a
year. He couldn't wait a year. He's
just done really well and we're so
proud of him."

Speaker reads the name: Jason
Stanley Early.

What would normally a proud
moment takes on an even greater meaning
for Early and his family.

And now that he has that degree?

"I don't know, you got a job for

me?"

Early says he'll take the summer
off and continue getting healthy, but
he might follow in his father's
footsteps, working in the insurance
industry.

For Early and his family, it's
all part of the long road to recovery.

"We just stick together and make
it day-by-day. Take it one day at a
time, that's all we can do, and we
are."

But with one milestone down, the
road from here will be a little easier.
