OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7 << Watching someone get shot is not
(END SOT) your average day on the job for any

officer.

"You can work your whole career
in law enforcement and never see
anything like that happen."

Chief Phillip Broadfoot says his
men went above and beyond when they
took on a gunman at the Institute for
Advanced Learning and Research Saturday
morning.

Corporal R.B. McCormick and
Officer Barry Sossoman arrived on the
scene just in time to watch Melvin
Wayne Smith shoot a man three times.

"It was like slow motion
happening all of a sudden. He turned
around and started running."

McCormick and Sossoman were right
behind him.

Even though their suspect was
armed, they followed him on foot -
asking him to put his hands up.

When he refused, they had the
option to shoot him, but never did.

"I didn't see an opportunity at
the time where I could actually
physically stop and try to shoot him as
fast as he was running."

They eventually caught their
suspect, tackling him and taking him
into custody.

For Officer Sossoman, it was real
life training.

Saturday was his third day on the

job.

He hasn't even been through the
police academy yet.

"What a way to start."

Sossoman says the ordeal has
taught him a valuable lesson - one
he'll remember on future calls.

"Not overreacting too quickly.
You gotta make the right decision, take
your time, use your head. Think."

The Danville Police Department
issued commendations Monday for
McCormick and Sossoman's bravery.

Meanwhile the victim in
Saturday's shooting is still recovering
at Duke Medical Center.

<< Good evening, I'm meteorologist
Robin Reed in the SkyTracker7 Forecast
Center. Strong winds have been the
main weather story this Monday. Some
gusts have been as high as 40mph in the

higher elevations. Winds will relax a
bit late tonight (West 10-20mph) as a
ridge of high pressure builds in from
the west. A few light showers can't be
ruled out this evening, but overall,
the clouds will hang tough. This same
ridge will usher in some changes in the
overall pattern Tuesday and Wednesday.
Look for more sunshine and warmer
temperatures as winds begin a more
southerly shift. By mid-week, a cold
front and low pressure system will
bring in more clouds and eventually a
chance of rain by Thursday. The pattern
looks a bit unsettled through the end
of the week, with rain chances on
Thursday and Friday as a front stalls
over the area. We could see a small
break in the action Saturday, before
another front arrives Sunday. MONDAY
NIGHT: Partly cloudy, breezy. Low: 45
TUESDAY: Partly sunny and warmer. High:
71 TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Low:
45

mstevens@wdbj7.com We begin tonight with coaching
news from the high school basketball

ranks in Martinsville.

When Troy Wells left the Bulldogs
program for Hidden Valley after he was
given a less than ringing endorsement
by his superintendent, Wells and most
in the Henry County community hoped the
Dogs' top assistant Kelvin Jackson
would have a chance to take over the
head coaching duties.

2006 State Tournament Tonight, some stability in the
state's most storied hoop program was
restored as Jackson, Wells right hand
man the last six years was approved as
the head coach by the Martinsville city
school board.

Jackson has many roots in Henry
County. He was the head coach at
Bassett for five years and before that
back in the day he also was an
assistant at old Drewry Mason with the
late great Jim Young.

Keys vs. Avalanche The weather was not exactly great :00 for a night at the park, but if you
have tickets and you have the family
ready to go and if you a big parka then
it was really OK.

Because it was, at the very
least, extremely entertaining.

Bottom of the first - Mark Ori
breaks his bat, Jordan Parraz has to
jump over it on his way to second.
Miguel Abreu will manage to get the
force at first, Jhon Florentino scores

and the Avs take a one to nothing lead.

The bat didn't hit anyone, but
Keys' pitcher Brandon Erbe would as he
pegs Nicholas Moresi right on the hands
and he struggles to get the feeling
back his left arm as he heads down to
first.

His arms were killing but there
was nothing wrong with his legs. Kevin
Carkeek doubles on a shot down the
third baseline into left field. Moresi
will crank it up and score all the way
from first on the play. *CG final Frederick

0 Salem would control this thing Salem from start to finish as Coby Clemens 7 served as the designated hittter and
hit a homerun and a double to bump
average up over 330.

The Avs opens the week in style
with a 7 to nothing win.
