China. A massive 7 point 8 quake rocked
a remote Sichuan province. As much as
80 percent of the buildings were
damaged in one county. Officials are
still determinining how many were
killed, but they estimate about 10,000.
Thousands more were injured. Some of
the victims were school children�buried
alive when their classrooms crumbled.
At one school, witnesses heard trapped
teenagers crying out for help.

�.Chinese leaders here in Beijing have
been quick to respond. High ranking
officials and search teams are racing
to the hardest hit areas.
Thousands will need their help. Power
and phone lines are down, water pipes
are ruptured and dangerous aftershocks
are likely. Rain is in the forecast and
landslides are expected.
The powerful quake was felt hundreds of
miles away in Shanghai and Beijing.
Rattled workers ran for their lives
when office buildings began swaying.
People were scared, but not hurt.
"Nothing fell over and nothing was
broken. Just a new experience for
people to feel an earthquake, I think."
The quake is one of the deadliest in
three decades and this crisis presents
a daunting challenge for China's
communist government� as it prepares
for the world spotlight when Summer
Olympics begin in less than 3 months.

investigating the death of Randall Lee
Smith, the suspect in last week's
double shooting near the Appalachian
Trail.

custody at the New River Valley
Regional Jail.
A State Police spokesman says the
department was asked to investigate by
the Giles County Sheriff's Office and
officials at the regional jail. The

of last week's shooting continues as
well.

today- he heard about Smith's death
over the weekend.

Johnston is 38 years old- from
Bluefield, Virgnia.

Robin Reed in the SkyTracker7 Forecast
Center. Strong winds have been the
main weather story this Monday. Some
gusts have been as high as 40mph in the
higher elevations. Winds will relax a
bit late tonight (West 10-20mph) as a
ridge of high pressure builds in from
the west. A few light showers can't be
ruled out this evening, but overall,
the clouds will hang tough. This same
ridge will usher in some changes in the
overall pattern Tuesday and Wednesday.
Look for more sunshine and warmer
temperatures as winds begin a more
southerly shift. By mid-week, a cold
front and low pressure system will
bring in more clouds and eventually a
chance of rain by Thursday. The pattern
looks a bit unsettled through the end
of the week, with rain chances on

the death of former Redskins' star Sean
Taylor will not be executed.
Miami prosecutors said today that
they will not seek the death penalty
against the four men.

Rubin said in a letter to the lawyers
for the suspects that the four will
face a maximum sentence of life in
prison if convicted.
Taylor's alleged shooter was only
17 when the crime was committed in
November of last year.
The 24-year-old Taylor - who
played at the University of Miami - was
shot at his south Florida home.

hunger online.

to countries in need.
For each correct word chosen in
the multiple choice game, sponsors
donate twenty grains of rice to combat
world hunger through the world food
program.
So far, according to the site,

donations are almost 32 billion grains
of rice.
