Smith died Saturday while in
custody at the New River Valley
Regional Jail, just one day after his
release from the hospital.

News 7's Joe Dashiell has been
following the story, and he is in our
New River Newsroom with the latest
developments.

but less than 24 hours later, Randall
Lee Smith was dead.

investigators have completed their work
here, they say they are still
collecting evidence and pursuing leads.

still have plenty of questions as well.
We may have results from the autopsy
tomorrow, but state police say their
investigation of Smith's death may take
several weeks, as they wait for the
results of toxicology tests.

Johnston is 38 years old- from
Bluefield, Virgnia.

weeks before one part of town is put
back together after last week's storms.

It's about 30 feet wide and 15
feet deep.

Next to it, is Lake Lanier.

The Health Department recently

hospitalized after being knocked
unconscious by one of two men he was
trying to arrest.

Lawrence is from a NEWS 7 story on
crime prevention a year and a half ago.

Saturday night Officer Lawrence
had stopped the two suspects on
Huntington Boulevard. They took off on
foot, but officer Lawrence caught up
with them. He was in the process of
cuffing one, when the other man
assaulted him.

the Go Mart gave police descriptions of
Dantonio Foster and William Steele,
Junior.

The two were charged with
malicious wounding and felony
obstruction of justice.

Two Danville police officers were
honored for their response to a weekend
shooting.

Corporal R. B. McCormick and
Officer Berry Sossoman (Soss-o-men)

answered a call at the Institute for
Advanced Learning and Research Saturday
morning.

They got there just in time to
watch Melvin Wayne Smith shoot another
man three times.

The officers chased Smith,
repeatedly asking him to show his
hands.

He refused.

The officers had cause to fire on
Smith, but they did not.

to slow down traffic on Springlawn
Avenue in Southwest Roanoke County.

Crews will be installing
two traffic islands to eliminate some
turns onto Ranchcrest Drive and
Merriman Road. They'll also put in
what's called a "speed table" midway
down Springlawn.

Though the work had been
planned for some time, it took on added
significance after a runner was hit by
a car and killed in January.

Robin Reed in the SkyTracker7 Forecast
Center. Strong winds have been the
main weather story this Monday. Some
gusts have been as high as 40mph in the
higher elevations. Winds will relax a

bit late tonight (West 10-20mph) as a
ridge of high pressure builds in from
the west. A few light showers can't be
ruled out this evening, but overall,
the clouds will hang tough. This same
ridge will usher in some changes in the
overall pattern Tuesday and Wednesday.
Look for more sunshine and warmer
temperatures as winds begin a more
southerly shift. By mid-week, a cold
front and low pressure system will
bring in more clouds and eventually a
chance of rain by Thursday. The pattern
looks a bit unsettled through the end
of the week, with rain chances on
Thursday and Friday as a front stalls
over the area. We could see a small
break in the action Saturday, before
another front arrives Sunday. MONDAY

ready to host two more NCAA
championships this weekend.

The first one that begins on
Friday will plenty of local flavor as
the ODAC member Lynchburg College joins
the Division Three softball party.

The Hornets beat Urisinus today

to earn their way into the eight team
field.

2008 ODAC Tournament Lynchburg should feel right at :00 home at the Moyer Complex later this
week.

Late last month, the Hornets beat
Virginia Wesleyan 4-to-1 in the ODAC
title game to earn their second
straight NCAA tournament berth.

Lynchburg - which is now 39 and 6
on the season - will play Muskingum in
the opening round on Friday at 6:30 at
the Moyer in Salem.

You can get individual game day
tickets or a tournament pass for the
entire event that costs $35.00 for
adults and $20.00 for youth.

Tickets are available at the
Salem Civic Center box office.
