and Georgia, after tornadoes killed 22
people over the weekend.

The scam is a form of phishing
where someone calls and claims you
missed your assigned jury duty.

Once you confirm your identity,
the scammer verifies that the victim
has in fact missed their court date and
says a small fine can be paid to clear
the matter or jail time will be
assessed.

The victim does not want to get
in trouble, so they provide the caller
with their personal information,

including a credit card number.

knocked unconscious by a man who was
trying to avoid getting arrested.

the suspect.

Originally they got a call about
two men being disorderly at a

an 18-year-old knocked the officer out.

hoping to learn more about an accused
murderer who died in jail over the
weekend.

Randall Lee Smith's body will be
sent to the medical examiner's office
in Roanoke on Monday.

He was found dead in his jail
cell Saturday.

The Giles County Sheriff's Office
says there was no evidence of suicide,

but that Smith did say he did NOT want
to live.

Smith was accused of shooting two
campers along the Appalachian Trail
last week.

He was also convicted of killing
two hikers in 1981.

Officials say they are still
investigating the recent shootings.

Around 9 o'clock last night,
Police say two men came into the store
with handguns and took a small amount

The scam is a form of phishing
where someone calls and claims you
missed your assigned jury duty.

Once you confirm your identity,
the scammer verifies that the victim
has in fact missed their court date and
says a small fine can be paid to clear
the matter or jail time will be
assessed.

The victim does not want to get
in trouble, so they provide the caller
with their personal information,
including a credit card number.

duty.

Law enforcement does NOT call
ahead to discuss the offense or what
papers will be served.

Deputies come out to people's
homes, in person.

Also, federal courts do not
require anyone to provide any sensitive
information in a telephone call.
