State media says the death toll is in
the THOUSANDS and getting higher, after
a strong earthquake shook the country
overnight.
Rescue teams and government
officials are racing to the hardest-
hit areas...hoping to reach victims
who were buried alive.
Charlie D'Agata has the latest.

The massive earthquake practically
leveled an entire county in central
China.
Officials say 80 percent of the
buildings in remote Sichuan Province
have
been destroyed. At this point... they
can only estimate the death toll, but
it appears to be in the thousands...
and still rising. At least ten
thousand more have been injured..
The 7 point 8 magnitude quake struck at
mid-day while buildings were packed
with people. Numerous schools
crumbled. Rescuers are trying dig out
about
900 students - buried alive in their
middle school. (natz)
Tremors were felt in cities hundreds of
miles away. Witnesses say office
towers in Shanghai and Beijing swayed
during the quake... People ran into
the streets - some screaming in fear.
But there was no major damage in
the Capitol City... where the summer
olympics will be held in just three
months.
Close to the epicenter, telephone and
power lines are down ... making it
difficult to receive updates on the
extent of damage and casualities, but
several high ranking Chinese officials
are headed to the area to oversee
rescue and cleanup operations.
And the worst may not be over. There
could be aftershocks... and with rain
in
the forecast... landslides are
possible.

releasing the details of his
transportation funding plan.
He's expected to call for a one-
percent increase in the vehicle titling
tax.
The tax is currently three

The medical examiner in Roanoke
is performing an autopsy on the body
of Randall Lee Smith-
Smith was found dead in his jail
cell Saturday.
The Giles County Sheriff's Office
says there was no evidence of suicide,
but that Smith said he did NOT want to
live.
Smith was accused of shooting two
campers along the Appalachian Trail
last week.
He was also convicted of killing
two hikers in 1981.
Officials say they are still
investigating the recent shootings.

central Florida today...where wildfires
have already burned thousands of acres.

Volusia and Brevard counties have been
hit especially hard by the wildfires.
Meanwhile, state troopers closed over
25 miles of a major highway, while
firefighters battled at least two

not before hundreds of homeowners had
to leave their homes.

portraying cops, had a real brush with
the law over the weekend.

Farina's free on bail after getting
arrested at the Los Angeles
International Airport.
The former police officer who
appeared on TV's "Law & Order", and in
films like "Snatch" and "Get Shorty"
faces a felony charge after a loaded
gun was found in his carry-on luggage.
Farina claims he'd forgotten the gun
was in there.
Police say the weapon was not
registered.

neighborhood are finally getting the
speed bump they asked for.

Farrell in earlier this year but many
say they've been compaling about the
rush of traffic for years.

in position for just his 3rd career win
in 15 years at the Players
Championship.

Robertson Memorial Junior Tournament
tees off Friday at the Roanoke Country
Club, and this year's event will be
extra special.
