of 54 year-old convicted killer Randall
Lee Smith could take several weeks.

VO-NAT But investigators say the autopsy
shows Smith did NOT die from injuries
caused by wrecking a truck.
Smith died Saturday - in
police custody -- one day after he was
released from the hospital.
He was at the New River Valley
Jail -- charged with shooting two men
last Tuesday near the Appalachian Trail
in Giles County.
Authorities say Smith stole a
truck from one of his victims and later
wrecked it.
He'd been convicted of murdering
two hikers in that same area back in
19-81.
Smith served 15 years for those
murders.

afternoon.
They heard about the shootings
last week from rangers along the
Appalachian Trail.
Although, the news was alarming
at first....there's now a sense of
closure since Smith's death.

People in an Altavista mobile
home park are on edge after a man was
killed there Monday night- by police.
Two Altavista police officers say
they were forced to shoot 57-year-old
Michael Long, because he was pointing a
shotgun at them.
Long died at the scene.
A 17-year old girl was hurt.
Neighbors who saw the shooting
say that girl was Long's daughter, and
he was trying to protect her from a
boyfriend.

personnel are on the shoulder.
Police are now on the lookout for
a dark colored, long nose tractor with

Some anxious moments for a
Roanoke Couple this afternoon, but

them hanging for long.

trailblazer in the Roanoke City
Sheriff's Office, and a 30- year
veteran of the department.
Billingsley died last week, and
today family and friends gathered for
his funeral.
Billingsley was the first African
American to serve as a Watch Commander,
and a Division Captain within the
Sheriff's Office.
Hired in April 1978 as a deputy,
Billingsley was Commander of the
department's Support Services Division
at the time of his death.

Nearly a year has passed
since his death.
Tonight, the one person who stood
quietly behind the Lynchburg leader...
shares her views.
News7's Tim Saunders sat down
with
Macel (may-sull) Falwell for a
look at her husband's life and legacy
now detailed in a new book.

bathtub!" their adult lives together in the
(END SOT) church.
It's the one thing Macel says
they always had in common - the place
where they first met.
"I played the piano at the church
and my friend played the organ. And
one night, somebody told him that they
had some pretty girls over there."
It wasn't the beginning you might
expect.
Macel wasn't even single.
"I was engaged to someone else,
but that didn't bother him at all"
And Jerry had to work to win his
girl.
"He would write me letters and
his friend, he would write me letters
too. They happened to be in the same
area, and so he said I'll take those
letters and mail them for you. And so
the friend would give him the letters
and he would (laughs) tear them up!"
But Macel says she never saw
herself marrying anyone but Jerry.
She says his big heart pulled her
in.
"You could come and cut his arm
off and he'd say 'oh, that's ok, don't
worry about it' (laughs), he's just
that type of person, and once somebody
gets to know him, they just can't
believe that they like him."
Falwell says her husband won over
many enemies with a selfless quality.
Giving the shoes off his feet to
a man without a pair of his own.
"He says what size do you wear?
And the man says 11 and a half. And he
says, that's what size I wear. Took
them off and gave them to him, came
home with just his socks on."
Falwell says her husband loved to
have fun - she fell victim to many of
his pranks.
"I was brushing my teeth and I
heard this horrible sound and I thought
'what is that?!' And I turned around
and looked and there was an alligator
in the bathtub!">>

winds light overnight. Lows will drop
to the low 40s. Clouds increase

in Amelia Island, Florida this week and
one of the items on the agenda was the
possibility of changing the conference
football schedule so that each team
would play 9 league games each season.
But the coaches complained loudly
about this proposal and reports this
afternoon say the idea has been tabled.
The big reason is that 9 games
would create an unbalance where some
years teams would play four at home and
five on the road.

U-V-A in front of a hundred and 10
thousand people at Penn State.
These Days he is playing minor League
baseball often in front of only a
handful of fans in the South Atlantic
League.
Grant Kittelson caught up with
the well rounded athlete and person as
he tries to hit the big leagues on the
Diamond.

the Crawdads, the low Single "A"
affliate of the Pittsburgh Piriates, it
is also where Tom Hagan is calling home
these days, a place the he hopes is
just one of many stops on a path that
ends in Major League Baseball.

Pro Baseball Environment which is a
long way removed from his days in the
