officer.
"You can work your whole career
in law enforcement and never see
anything like that happen."
Chief Phillip Broadfoot says his
men went above and beyond when they
took on a gunman at the Institute for
Advanced Learning and Research Saturday
morning.
Corporal R.B. McCormick and
Officer Barry Sossoman arrived on the
scene just in time to watch Melvin
Wayne Smith shoot a man three times.
"It was like slow motion
happening all of a sudden. He turned
around and started running."
McCormick and Sossoman were right
behind him.
Even though their suspect was
armed, they followed him on foot -
asking him to put his hands up.
When he refused, they had the
option to shoot him, but never did.
"I didn't see an opportunity at
the time where I could actually
physically stop and try to shoot him as
fast as he was running."
They eventually caught their
suspect, tackling him and taking him
into custody.
For Officer Sossoman, it was real
life training.
Saturday was his third day on the
job.
He hasn't even been through the
police academy yet.
"What a way to start."
Sossoman says the ordeal has
taught him a valuable lesson - one
he'll remember on future calls.
"Not overreacting too quickly.
You gotta make the right decision, take
your time, use your head. Think."
The Danville Police Department
issued commendations Monday for
McCormick and Sossoman's bravery.
Meanwhile the victim in
Saturday's shooting is still recovering
at Duke Medical Center.

Hillary Clinton hopes a lopsided win
today can make her long-shot a little
shorter.

It seems unlikely. Even the
overwhelming victory the Clinton
campaign expects
won't do much to radically change the
race.

The contrast in campaigning has been
obvious. Clinton's hit the state hard
for a week....and Barack Obama's
mostly stayed away. But while she's
focused
on West Virginia, he's focused on John
McCain.

CANDIDATE) : "I COULD NOT DISAGREE WITH
HIM MORE."
Obama put down his stump speech
yesterday and attacked McCains's record
of
providing for veterans. Issues of
patriotism have dogged Obama for months

they're sure to be front and center
for the likely head-to-head matchup in
November.
(SOT OBAMA): "MY GRANDFATHER - STANLEY
DUNHAM - ENLISTED AFTER PEARL HARBOR
AND WENT ON TO MARCH IN PATTON'S
ARMY."
Obama's super-delegate boost affords
him the long-run view. A flurry of
endorsements has put him within reach
of the nomination by the end of primary
season.

We have some traffic information
to pass along...starting at six o clock
tonight, the left lane on I-81
southbound at milemarker 128 near
Ironto will be closed so crews can work
on bridge repairs.
The lane will re-open at six
tomorrow morning, but drivers should
expect a new traffic pattern.
Both lanes will be open, but
traffic will be split, traveling on
either side of the work zone. Wide
loads will be detoured onto Route 11 at
exit 132 near Dixie Caverns and will be
directed back to I- 81 at exit 118 in
Christiansburg.

work to slow down traffic on Springlawn
Avenue in Southwest Roanoke County.
Crews will be installing
two traffic islands to eliminate some
turns onto Ranchcrest Drive and
Merriman Road. They'll also put in
what's called a "speed table" midway
down Springlawn.
Though the work had been
planned for some time, it took on added
significance after a runner was hit by
a car and killed in January.

investigators have completed their work
here, they say they are still

thousands of dollars a year removing
grafitti at the Mill Mountain Star but
it's still a huge problem.

overlook deck was replaced with new
materials that are more vandal proof.
It's worked for the most part
except on the railings which are
covered in graffiti.
The city is trying something new
to combat the problem but as News 7's

Some say the solution is for police

the police department hasn't made an

years. There was only one property
damage report filed at the star last
year.

left at least one person dead.
The victim was found outside the
backdoor of a home in the 15-hundred
block of Main Street.
