driver on Interstate 81 just before
seven o'clock this morning.
The trooper and driver were in
his unmarked cruiser when investigators
say *another* tractor trailer
side-swiped the car.

officers are on leave after a shooting
in Altavista.

It happened last night around
8:30 in the 15-hundred block of Main
Street.
Officers were responding to a
"shots fired" call.
When they arrived, police say a
suspect confronted them with a shotgun.
In a statement, Altavista chief
Tommy Neal says the officers ordered
the suspect to drop his weapon.
When he refused, Neal says both
officers fired their guns.
57-year-old Michael Long of Hurt
was killed.
A 17-year-old girl was also taken
to Lynchburg General Hospital, her
injuries were not life threatening.
As is routine in such cases, the
officers involved in the shooting are
on administrative leave.
Their names have not been released.
State Police will investigate the
incident.

including the budget cuts that city
staff had proposed.

Other departments faced cuts as
well.
The new budget is almost three

yesterday's quake is coming into focus.

There is life beneath the mountains of
rubble in central China.
But for every survivor found alive
.... dozens are found dead.

Overwhelming grief is blanketing the
region.
The death toll from Monday's powerful
earthquake has soared past 10 thousand
and officials fear almost twice that
many could still be buried. The
powerful
quake was centered in remote Sichuan
Province...ripping apart small cities
and mountain villages. It was felt
900 miles away in Beijing and even in
Hanoi.
The Chinese government has dispatched
thousands of soldiers to help, but rain
is hampering their rescue efforts. And
with many victims buried under giant
slabs of concrete, more heavy equipment
is needed.

China's Premier rushed to the area. On
state run TV...he promised to try to
save people, restore power and rebuild
factories .
More than two dozen British and America

burning-- and officials say at least

deliberately set.

Atlantic coast.
The biggest blaze in Palm Bay has
damaged some 70 homes. and scorched 35-

Fire crews have been fighting the

A local fire official predicts it's
going to be challenging

It's the second time in six months
that a parking deck in Charlotte has
collapsed.
A woman was killed in December, when
her car crashed into a support wall at

weekend.

near Springfield, Missouri.
A Highway Patrolman says Rambo's tour
bus ran off Interstate 44, and struck
an embankment.
Seven other people on the bus were
hospitalized with moderate to severe
injuries.
Rambo was inducted into the
Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame last
year.

GRAPHIC=NCAA SOFTBALL The City of Salem is getting
ready to host two more NCAA
championships this weekend.
The first one that begins Friday
will have plenty of local flavor, as
the ODAC member Lynchburg College joins
the Division Three softball party.
The Hornets beat Urisinus to earn
their way into the eight team field.

2008 ODAC Tournament Lynchburg should feel right at
:00 home at the Moyer Complex later this
week.
Late last month, the Hornets beat
Virginia Wesleyan 4-to-1 in the ODAC
title game to earn their second
straight NCAA tournament berth.
Lynchburg - which is now 39 and 6
on the season - will play Muskingum in
the opening round Friday at 6:30 at
the Moyer in Salem.
You can get individual game day
tickets, or a tournament pass for the
entire event that costs $35.00 for
adults and $20.00 for youth.
Tickets are available at the
Salem Civic Center box office.

certainly were high at Blue Hills Golf
Club yesterday for the 12th annual King
Family Memorial Tournament.

played for is apparent at its
conclusion-- a Ten Thousand Dollar
scholarship that is handed out to a
lucky graduating senior in High School.
This year's winner is Ross
Spencer from William Byrd, who will
attend James Madison University in the
Fall.
Spencer is very familiar to those
who make the rounds at Blue Hills.
