was rocked by a massive earthquake..
and now there's a new threat in hard
hit areas.. nearly 400 dams have
developed dangerous cracks.
But as Celia Hatton reports, amid the
devastation there is hope.

(END SOT) Survivors are still being rescued...two
days after a massive earthquake
devastated central China.
With neighbors applauding every
move...a woman who was 8 months
pregnant was
pulled to safety this morning.
The fire chief called it a miracle.
But for thousands of others, there is
nothing to cheer about. The death toll
is
around15,000...and tens of thousands
are still missing, injured or homeless.
many villages have been virtually
wiped out.
In Dujiangyan City...soldiers guard the
road leading to the epicenter...as
stunned residents wander the streets.

A lot of the stores have shut their
doors, so people are reducing to buying
whatever they can find for sale on the
street. There's also a long line for
drinking water.
The government is dealing with a
disaster zone roughly the size of
Maryland. Many mountain roads have
yet to be cleared....forcing troops to
hike to the
hardest hit areas. Military helicopters
have started dropping supplies, but
storms are getting in the way.
And now there is word from state media
that troops are rushing to plug
"extremely dangerous" cracks in a dam
upriver from Dujiangyan.
China's premier has been at the
forefront of relief operations since
the quake hit. he was back on state
run TV today...seen visiting a
hospital. Beijing
hosts the Olympics in less than 3
months...and the leader seems intent on
showing the world... China can handle
this crisis and any other challenges it
may face .

Yesterday The ruling military claims about 38
thousand people were killed and nearly
28 thousand are missing.
The Red Cross says as many more.. as
many as 128 thousand may have died.
Also the U-S will keep sending aid
to Myanmar me-yah-mar, even though
concerns linger that the military there
is confiscating most of it.
Officials remain leery of the
government's behavior, but admit the
humanitarian cost would be far worse if
assistance were stopped altogether.

But getting help to some areas
has been complicated.

(END SOT) At Gleaning for the World,
they're moving boxes.
Another nat hit of some sort.
And loading trucks full of
supplies for the cyclone ravaged
country of Myanmar.
Ismael LaBiosa: "We're sending
out water, blankets, and survival kits
that's going to Pennsylvania to our
sister organization that's going to be
shipping these supplies straight to
Myanmar."
Items that normally would be
shipped out just hours after a disaster
have had to sit in Appomattox County
for days, because Gleaning and other
groups have had to wait for permission
from the Myanmar government to send
aid.
"We found a loophole. The local
churches there in Myanmar, they have
permission from the government there to
accept supplies from our sister
organizations." Even with their rapid
response, it could still take up to
four weeks for this shipment to reach
the people who need it.
"Whether we ship it or whether we
fly it, we're trying to get it there as
fast as we can because these people
need help right now."
Normally, these shelves would be
stocked full of relief supplies. But
thanks to natural disasters in the US
and around the world in the last few
months, their supplies are running low.
"Gleaning for the world has never
seen such a high call for help because
of natural disasters."
So while they keep sending out
shipments, they're working to collect
new donations too.
"We count on others to donate to
help us do the greatest good for these
people who are in need."
And as new disasters create more
need, it won't be long before another
truck gets filled up with relief from
Central Virginia.

A witness reportedly saw Crowder

Meanwhile on Wall Street, the stock
market rallied after the Labor
Department released a
better-than-expected report on consumer
prices.
The Dow gained 66 points to finish
at 12,898.

Last night, a robut conducted the
symphony in a performance of
"Impossible Dream."
Designed by Honda Motor Company,
it's name is Asimo, which stands for
Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility.
The robot greeted his audience
and went on to mimic the actions of a
conductor, nodding its head and
gesturing with one or both hands.
The audience shouted
enthusiastically as Asimo took its
final bow.
