connection with a deadly Roanoke County
crash smelled of alcohol when they were
arrested and failed several sobriety
tests.
That from the arresting
officers who testified just a short
time ago at the preliminary hearing for
Tracie Nininger NINE-in-jer and Jeff
Dupree.

February 20 Nininger and Dupree were
driving separate S-U-V's through a
construction zone on Route 419 early on
the morning of February 20th.
Their vehicles crashed into a
backhoe, crushing worker Richard Slone
of Vinton.
Today, one of Slone's
co-workers said he was holding a stop
sign at the beginning of the
construction zone, saw two vehicles
driving fast toward him and he had to
move out of the way.
He turned around and saw the
S-U-V's hit the backhoe, spinning it
around and crushing Slone.

attorneys, however, the backhoe driver
admitted he couldn't definitively say
the blade on his vehicle was out of the
travel lane of Route 419.
The hearing is still going on
at this hour.

who robbed a bank in Grayson County may
have also struck a bank in Georgia.

The suspect appears to be

May 7 Danville Wal-Mart the night of May
Seventh.
You can see two men walk
through the parking lot, then go after
a woman and her purse.
The men pulled the woman over
a shopping cart as they grabbed her
purse and ran to their car to drive
away.
The woman had some minor
scrapes.
Danville Police released the

photo of the two men entering the store
earlier that night.

A lot of debris and organic
matter did wash in during last week's
storms.
The water plant was shut down
Monday to clean it all out.
But town officials say they're
still seeing unsafe levels of
contamination.
They've asked Virginia's
department of environmental quality to
figure out what's polluting the water.
Meanwhile, residents shouldn't
notice a difference in the quality of
what's coming from their tap.

accused of shooting two campers just
off the Appalachian Trail in Giles
County last week has left many
unanswered questions.

Authories say he shot two men
after gaining their trust last Tuesday
night.
Smith served 15 years for killing
two people in the same area back in
19-81.

for four people who were hurt on a
ride.

It happened last night at the
Mall of America's Nickelodeon Universe
theme park in Minnesota.
A park spokesman says two adults
and two children suffered minor leg
injuries while riding the Backyardigans
Swing-Along ride.
It was apparently rotating too
quickly.
The ride will remain closed until
crews figure out what caused the
problem and fix it.
The people who were injured were
treated at the mall and did not have to
go to the hospital.

allegedly shows her taking drugs..

winning singer for nine hours last week
over a January video that appears to
show her smoking a pipe usually used
for crack cocaine.. the video was taken

home.

clear for now.

maintenance to high-tech. Let's visit

Chief Meteorologist Rewind...to the late 1970s, The latest
:15 technology consisted of hand-placing
highs and lows on a magnetic map and
citing the weather trend..with a little
humor.
Bruce Edwards was hired as WDBJ's first
meteorologist on-staff. In the early
80s, a then "young" Robin Reed became a
permanant fixture on the daily
weathercasts. (Robin NATS)
Technology had advanced to hand-written
temperatures on plexiglass and camera
cards that showed the nation's
forecast. But along came computers.
WDBJ became the first station with a
radar display, and greenscreen
technology. But cutting edge weather
came with it's share of comical
outakes.

Ticker and Salem the City of Champions
will be bustling with athletic activity
all weekend long.
The City will be hosting both the
Division 3 Women's Lacrosse National
Championship as well as the Division 3
Softball World Series.
In addition to the college
events, the Level 4 Virginia State
Gymnastics championship is being held
at the Salem Civic Center.
Pulling off a triple play of this
nature takes a lot of coordination by
the folks running the tournaments.

Championship.
The Hokies will begin play in
their N-C-A-A regional tomorrow
afternoon down in Knoxville, Tennessee.

This is the Hokies 4th trip to an
N-C-A-A Regional and they will see some
familiar territory and teams when they
hit the diamond.
Tech is going to Knoxville for

only Tech squad trying to win a
regional in the state of Tennessee.
The Virginia Tech Golf Team teed off in
their first of 3 Rounds down in
Chattanooga. The Hokies need to finish
in the Top 10 out of 27 teams to
advance to the Finals. Right now Jay
Hardwick's club is currently in 7th
place at 5 under par as a team.

tall to raise awareness for cerebal
palsy.

Neil Sauter is walking on stilts
across the state, a total of more than
830 miles in just 20 days.
Sauter wants to raise ten thousand
dollars for cerebal palsy research.
It is a condition he has to deal with
himself.
It turns his legs inward which makes
walking on stilts all the more
difficult. He says he wants people who
hear about his long walk to know they
can rise above any challenges if they
just work hard enough.
