fatal construction zone accident have
been convicted of a D-U-I.

VO-NAT Richard Slone of Vinton died on
the early morning of February 20th
while working in a work zone on Route
419 near Tanglewood Mall.
Prosecutors say Tracie Nininger
was drunk when she struck a backhoe,
which then hit Slone.
Almost immediately, Jeff Dupree
struck the rear of the Hummer with his
vehicle.
As a result, both are charged
with involuntary manslaughter.

Defense attorney's argue the blade on
the back of the backhoe actually caused
the accident.
The driver of the backhoe concedes
the blade may have been sticking out in
the travel lane.

County Turn on any faucet and Chatham,
(END SOT) and you probably won't notice anything
wrong with what comes out.
Jeanette Brown/Chatham Resident:
"Ours has been fine. We haven't
noticed any change in the color or in
the taste."
But there is a problem at the
source.
Water inside Chatham's filtration
plant is showing high levels of a mud,
chemicals, and other contaminates.
Mike Jones/Chatham Town Manager:
"It all started with a bunch of clouds
and a big rain storm."
Nats of creek
That caused the creek that
Chatham pulls its water from to fill up
with debris and everything else that
washes down during a storm.
They shut down their water plant
Monday to clean it all out.
But the contamination is still
there - town officials believe it may
be coming from fertilizers.
Jones: "It's unknown at this
time, but we're not letting that
unknown get into the system."
As for what's going out to
customers.
Jones: "The water that comes out
of their taps is safe to drink. I've
drank it and not thought twice about
it."
This situation has affected some
local businesses. Until they get the
water straightened out, every
laundromat and car wash is shut down.
Jones: "We're sorry we have to do
that, because we understand the
economic impact, but the owners have
been universally supportive of what the
town's doing."
Residents are supportive too.
Brown: "I know they'll fix it.
Whatever needs to be done, they'll fix
it."
And get the water flowing
normally again.

basketball player who was killed
earlier that day outside the Afton
Garden Apartments on Hunt Avenue.
Gilkes says she and Foster got
into an argument and it turned

deadly construction accident have been
convicted of D-U-I.

Tracie Nininger and Jeff Dupree
did not say a word to one another at
the beginning of yesterday's hearing.
In fact, Dupree's attorney came
over and sat between them so they would
have no interaction.
During the three hour hearing,
several officers testifed that Nininger
and Dupree were clearly drunk on the
night Richard Slone was struck and
killed while working in a construction
zone on Electric Road.
Slone's family tells us they're
still trying to get over the tragedy.

Columns of soldiers have finally inched
into ALL the isolated areas hit worst
by Monday's earthquake....and the
devastation is as bad as feared.

There are still handfuls of victims
being found alive. This boy was barely
hanging on after 80 hours entombed
beneath his collapsed school. The
first
thing he did was ask for a soda...

But hope is running out many more
survivors will be found. The damaged
area
is so wide-spread that the rescue
efforts of man and machine are
stretched
very thin. Even when crews do detect
life, sometimes there's nothing that
can be done.

China was initially slow to accept

The search for food, water and safety
has triggered mass migrations from

accused of shooting two people just off
the Appalachian Trail in Giles County
last week.

Authories say he shot two men
after gaining their trust last Tuesday
night.
Smith served 15 years for killing
two people in the same area back in
19-81.
Many in Giles County, including
investigators, are now left wondering
if Smith had more victims they don't
know about.
Radford University Criminal
Justice professor Doctor Tod Burke says
it's unlikely Smith was a serial
killer.
Neighbors described Smith a local
guy who stayed close to home even after
serving time for murder.

while working in a work zone on Route
419 near the Tanglewood Mall.
Prosecutors say Tracie Nininger
was drunk when she struck a backhoe
which then hit Slone.
Almost immediately, Jeff Dupree
struck the rear of the Hummer with his
vehicle.
As a result, both are charged
with involuntary manslaughter.

Gilkes say Dantonio dan-tonio Foster --
she knows as "L-A" - was acting out
after his best friend was killed
earlier in the day.
Just before two o'clock Saturday -James
Stokes was shot outside the Afton
Garden Apartments on Hunt Avenue.
According to court documents -Stokes,
who was a former William Fleming
basketball standout, was fighting with
Gilkes' son.
While she didn't want to talk about her
son or any possible tie in to the
murder, she says she's frightened and
her family is in hiding.

40 of its students have special needs.
Thanks to the community coming together
