for a juvenile, as they investigate a
case of animal cruelty.
They say it happened around 6- 30
last night in the 100 block of Levelton
Street.
The owner of a one-year-old Labrador
Retriever mix says their dog was shot
in the right hip-- but the dog is
expected to be okay..
Authorities found the gun...but are
still looking for the juvenile
responsible.

shooting in Salem will stay in jail...

VO-NAT Yesterday a judge denied bond for
Bryan Sheppard.
Sheppard is the man accused of
shooting and killing James "Rich"
Fleshman in a Food Lion parking last
month.
Investigators say Sheppard had
been stalking Fleshman and was upset he
was dating his estranged wife.
Sheppard is being held at the
Roanoke County Jail.
His preliminary hearing is
scheduled for June 27th.

with D-U-I will NOT face conviction...

VO-NAT In March, Judge Michael
Blankenship was charged with driving
under the influence on Interstate 81 in
Smyth County.
Yesterday, he pleaded guilty to
reckless driving instead -- as well as
refusing to take a Breathalyzer test.
Blankenship will lose his
driver's license for a year, and he's
ordered to pay a 100-dollar fine.
He's currently on leave from the
bench, and his attorney said
Blankenship will NOT resign.

giving the local sheriff's office extra
resources to fight online predators.

people investigating internet crimes.
The funding comes from Alicia's
Law -- passed this year by the General
Assembly.
A task force that investigates
crimes across the state will also
benefit.
They're getting a new
intellegence analyst, software, and
money to train investigators.
Alicia's Law is dedicated to
Alicia Kozakiewicz (Coze-uh-kev-itch) -
a Pennsylvania teen who was kidnapped
and abused by an internet predator.
Kozakiewicz was made an honorary
deputy yesterday with the Bedford
County Sheriff's Office.

law banning a type of late-term
abortion is still unconstitutional,
this after a similar federal ban was
upheld by the U-S Supreme Court.
The 2-1 decision by the fourth
U-S Circuit Court of Appeals affirms
the same court's 20-05 ruling striking
down the law.
The appeals court cited a key
difference between the federal and
state bans on a procedure that abortion
opponents call
"partial-birth abortion."
The federal law protects doctors
who set out to perform a legal abortion
that by accident becomes the banned
procedure.
The Virginia law provides no such
protection.

deadly earthquake that hit China last
week.

by Roanoke Valley Sister Cities.
Roanoke's Chinese sister-city is
Lijiang (lees-yong).
Organizers say the candlelight
vigil is a way to be with them in
spirit.
