(NAT) - GAS PUMPS

With people getting ready to travel for
the Memorial Day weekend -- drivers

are paying an average of 3-dollars and
83-cents a gallon. Oil prices shot to

a new high of 135-dollars a barrel
this morning. And lawmakers have had

enough.

(SOT - LAWMAKER TBD)

A House panel is grilling top oil
executives -- demanding explanations
for

record prices while their companies
enjoy record profits. But the
executives

insist: it's not their fault.

(SOT - OIL EXECUTIVE TBD)

(STANDUP BRIDGE: Tara Mergener / CBS
NEWS / WASHINGTON, DC) - "While many

drivers are struggling with these
prices, experts now predict crude will

likely hit 200-dollars a barrel by the
end of next year. That could mean gas

at 7-dollars a gallon."

(SOT - LAWMAKER TBD)

The gas prices are causing a litany of
economic woes. Airlines are adding

surcharges to pay for jet fuel, and
inflation is up - in part because it
costs

a lot more to deliver goods.

The Dow dropped more than four hundred
points in the past two days... and

automakers are seeing sales plummet.
Ford announced it's cutting back on
the

number of gas guzzling trucks and SUVs
it planned to build this year.

(NAT) -

Saudi Arabia agreed to put an extra
300-thousand barrels of oil on the
market,

per day -- but, industry analysts say
-- that's a drop in the bucket at a

time when supply is down and demand is
up.

Ford also cut back its projections

:00 But "Humpy" Wheeler - who has
been the driving force in NASCAR with
his words and actions for the past 33
years announced his retirement
yesterday at the age of 69.

Wheeler did everything from defy
the critics and install lights at
Charlotte when the so-called experts
said it was impossible to light a track
a mile and a half in length.

He also was the first promoter to
treat fans with a full blown pre-race
show that usually included the absurd.

Wheeler says he plans to write a
book and do some commentary in the
future.
