(END SOT) at Lynchburg's Courtland Center three
times.
"Rebekah Wright: The rate that I
was going. I would not be alive today
without the staff ."
Today, she's clean - but she
worries how others will fight their
addictions once the program ends.
"The suicide rate is going to go
up. The rate of overdoses will go up."
There are concerns the Central
Virginia Community Services board says
it considered before voting to stop the
program.
Ultimately, they say their
decision came down to money.
Nancy Cottingham: "The program
has been losing money for many years.
It's a very valuable service to the
community, but we couldn't continue to
support it."
For just one person to go through
the 28-day program, it costs more than
7-thousand dollars. And since most
patients never pay that amount,
Community Services says they simply
can't afford to keep this program
running.
"There are no other sources of
funding for this particular program.
We're pretty much dependent on state
money to pay for the high cost of this
program and it's a very expensive
program."
But those pushing to save the
program say the center should give
itself time to find other sources of
funding.
They say not doing that will lead
to problems even bigger than substance
abuse.
Teresa Fischer: "Addicts are not
going to be able to get treatment which
in turn is going to cause problems with
the hospitals and the courts."
"This is bothersome to us and
we're very upset about it, but the
reality is we can't afford to continue
providing this program."
And until they can find the
money, they're still planning to close
June 30th.

It's not JUST the airlines' bottom line

The numbers aren't pretty:
75-percent of air travelers believe the

The 28-day program at the
Courtland Center has been operating
since the late 70's.
But a lack of funding is forcing

Central Virginia Community

They say treating just one person
costs more than 7-thousand dollars.
And since most never pay that
amount, they can't afford to stay in
business.
