National Forrest earlier this month.
A fellow fisherman befriended
them - ate supper with them, and
eventually shot them -- several times.
Police say the shooter was
Randall Lee Smith - a convicted
murdered who killed two hikers in the
same area back in 19-81.
Farmer and Johnston were both
hospitalized for several days.

Johnston and Farmer, Randall Lee Smith,
was convicted of killing two people in
the same area nearly three decades ago.

prison.
Smith was taken to the hospital
after wrecking a truck he stole from
Johnston and Farmer.
He died one day after he was
transferred to the New River Valley
Jail.
The cause of Smith's death has

by a sheriff's deputy last night says
the victim suffered from dementia.

Office says Deputy David Cressell shot
Harvey Collins twice.
Collins was 70 years old.

Last Night Nicewander Way Trailer park in
Fairlawn.
Investigators say the deputy was
responding to a call when Collins
reportedly assaulted him.
The deputy was not hurt.
He's on paid, administrative
leave, which is standard procedure.
According to court records,
Collins had been in trouble with the
law before.
In 2006, he pled guilty to
resisting arrest.

Another fatal shooting in the New
River Valley, this one in Floyd County.
It happened last night on Conner
Grove Road in the Willis area.
Officials aren't releasing many
details, but someone was airlifted to
the hospital.
Neighbors along Connor Grove Road

killed.

State Police say a Floyd County
animal control officer shot 75-year old
Paul Belcher as he was trying to put
down one of his cows.
Belcher died of a single gun shot
wound at the scene last night in Willis
area.
Because the officer who's accused
of shooting Belcher works for the
county, a special prosecutor from
Franklin County has been appointed to
handle the case.
